Anna Wintour Apologizes for Confusing 2024 Met Gala Theme

As you’re likely aware and somewhat confused by, the 2024 Met Gala theme is officially “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” But the dress code is “The Garden of Time.” And if neither of these two phrases mean anything to you, you’re not alone! The Met Gala theme has caused some confusion—to the point where Anna Wintour actually apologized for it.

“This exhibition broke my cardinal rule,” Anna said on Today ahead of the Met Gala. “When we came up with the title ‘Sleeping Beauties,’ it’s wonderful and poetic and romantic, but actually, it could be many, many things.”

“I said, ‘What are we gonna say to people to wear to this night?’ And [MET Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton] said, ‘Well, what about ‘Garden of Time?’ So, I fear that we’ve unleashed a lot of confusion out there, and for which I deeply apologize.”

So...what is the vibe this year? Basically, flowers for spring. We have a whole breakdown over here, but the Met issued a press release saying their exhibition “will explore cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal, breathing new life into these storied objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the smells, sounds, textures, and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body.”

Meanwhile, Vogue said, “The forthcoming show has not to do with the Brothers Grimm or Disney but rather the celebration of clothing and fashion so fragile that it can’t ever be worn again—and are thus sleeping beauties in the scrupulous archives of the Costume Institute.”
