Dannii Minogue has revealed that she identifies as queer.

During an emotional night at the launch of I Kissed a Girl, the BBC’s new dating reality programme, the Australian singer announced, “I identify as queer in a weird way”.

I Kissed a Girl is the UK’s first dating reality show for queer women and follows the same format as its predecessor I Kissed a Boy; 10 singles enter an Italian Masseria where they are matched up with a mystery partner – who they must greet with a kiss before even introducing themselves.

The contestants can then get to know their match – and the other girls – to see who they have the best chemistry with. Five new girls will enter the Masseria along the way, with the intention of stealing someone away from their couple in order to secure their stay.

Talking about the contestants on the show, Dannii said: “You girls are so brave and amazing and have brought so much to it. I could never do what you have done.”

“You’re stepping forward, and you’re the first crew of girls representing in this space, and it is big,” she added.

She went on to say that she was “so proud” of the show and hopes that there are more series so that other queer women can have the opportunity to take part. “This is so important. There hasn’t been a show for the girls in the reality gay dating world. It’s like we need this to happen. I’m hoping that there are parties up and down the country,” she said.

Speaking to the Metro about the launch of I kissed a Boy last year, Dannii said she expressed how the show was breaking down barriers, saying: “There’s so much to be learned from the show, for families, friends and allies, and even for people who attack the community.”

I Kissed a Girl is available to watch on BBC Three every Sunday and Monday night at 9pm, and episodes will be available on BBC player.
