You may recognise Portelli from last year's season of The Block, where the multi-millionaire bid up to $4.8 million on one of the homes.
He didn't win, but just weeks later he proved he had the cash by snapping up another home that didn't sell on the day.
"I was fairly low-key back then. So no one really knew what I was worth, or what money I had … People thought I couldn't afford the house, but obviously I knew I could buy all the houses," Portelli told A Current Affair.

With more than 40 cars and 20 homes to his name, he has just purchased a record breaking $39 million penthouse in Melbourne.
The cherry on top is a $3 million McLaren Senna GTR, which is one of only 75 in the world.
It was craned into his living room, which is something that Portelli proudly refers to as a "marketing stunt".

"It's not showing off. At the end of the day, as you can see, the car is fully branded, it was a marketing stunt … Why wouldn't I want my car in my penthouse?" he said.
Portelli said the McLaren can't be registered on Australian roads so the next best thing was to marvel at it from the comfort of his couch.
"If I went back five years ago or 10 years ago and I said to myself, 'you're going to be craning your $3 million McLaren into a $39 million penthouse', it gives me goosebumps," he said.
The Sapphire Apartments Penthouse on the 57th floor takes up two levels, with Portelli now hoping to snap up the smaller floor above, giving him three levels and 360-degree views across Melbourne.
Portelli said he won't be living in the penthouse, it'll just be his "weekender".

"My main business, LMCT Plus, is very public, so you do hear a lot about that. But there are a lot of businesses in the background, investments, real estate, medical, that we are doing … It's a group of businesses that make up my worth," he said.
Portelli estimates his wealth to be upwards of $1 billion on paper, with his diverse portfolio turning over about $100 million each year.
But he doesn't call himself a billionaire just yet.
"I'll say it when it's in my bank account. On paper it's one thing, in your bank account it's something else," he said.

"I was doing it tough once upon a time as well. I wasn't born into the situation, I worked for it," he said.
When it comes to choosing how to spend his money he said: "I'll do what I want."
Portelli grew up from humble beginnings in the western suburbs of Melbourne.
He said he risked everything to be where he is today and it's not for the faint of heart.
"Some people can use this as motivation to get the life they deserve, or some people can hate and be negative about it," Portelli said.
Portelli said it wasn't a success for him on the first go.
He has tried it all, including moving to LA to start a limousine business.

"A lot of nights I'd cry myself to sleep. It was hard.
"A lot of people don't see that. They only see this kind of stuff, but they don't see what it took to get there."
Portelli also considers himself a philanthropist and said he often helps people in need.
"So we team up and help out a lot of disadvantaged children, we have a lot of people reaching out to us, families that need help," Portelli said.
He said he recently donated $100,000 to Toy World to help give a few hundred kids a better Christmas.
So what's next for Portelli?
"There is no ultimate goal. It's just, keep going as hard as you can, as fast as you can," he said.
For those who fancy themselves to be Portelli's neighbour, the penthouse below is up for sale for a cool $13 million.
