Cats in the lead at half-timeBy Steve Barrett

A flurry of five unanswered goals has steered Geelong to a 20-point half-time lead over Port Adelaide in a fast-paced, ball-pinging, end-to-end qualifying final at Adelaide Oval.

Jeremy Cameron added to his miracle first-quarter goal with another slick finish, which he celebrated enthusiastically, Michael O’Loughlin-style, on the fence, staring down a Power fan offering his feedback.

Willie Rioli almost pulled down the mark of the night over Jake Kolodjashnij, before Ollie Dempsey was able to go one better when he latched onto a screamer over Jase Burgoyne on the outer wing.

Tyson Stengle has bagged three goals, while Max Holmes shrugged off a left foot scare to thrive with his pace through the middle, captain Patrick Dangerfield riding shotgun.

Here’s how it looked on the stats sheet.

Port pull one back

Connor Rozee gets a badly needed goal for Port just before half-time.

He found space where he shouldn’t have deep in attack to bend one through from about 30 metres out.

Rozee hasn’t done much tonight with just the 10 possessions.

A magical Cameron goal, againBy Peter Ryan

Jeremy Cameron was getting a bit bored as he had gone more than half an hour without kicking a magical goal. Patrick Dangerfield has been crucial with two goal assists playing as a midfield-forward. The quick ball movement is putting Port’s defence under serious pressure with Jack Henry and Zac Guthrie holding up for the Cats in defence so far.

Five in a row for Geelong

Jeremy Cameron has booted two of the best goals you’d want to see in a final.

That one was a dribbler from the outside of his left boot which bounced through a vacant goal square.

Port are under the pump. They can’t defend Geelong’s ball movement.

8.43pm

Four in a row for Geelong

Brilliant end to end movement of the ball results in a goal to Tyson Stengle, whose second for the night has put the Cats up by 15 points.

That was some hoof as well by Shaun Mannagh, who was precise with his 55-metre kick on the run. It would have been a goal if Stengle had not marked in the goal square.

It’s now four in a row. Gryan Miers has curled one in from 25 metres out. The Cats are now up by 21 points.

Young Cat showing his class

This game is being played at a breathtaking pace. The ball is pinging from end to end.

It’s games like these, where the pressure is high, that the best players really shine through.

I’ve been really impressed by Lawson Humphries’ game. His courage to run then look for the attacking kick shows a calmness one would not expect from a player in his debut season.

8.31pm

Henry pounces

Ollie Henry redeems himself after being completely outpointed in a marking contest.

He pounced on a loose ball and made no mistake from the goal square. The Cats’ lead is out to eight points.

8.29pm

Cats regain the lead

Port had the lead for all of 76 seconds. The Cats cleared the ball out of the middle for Jack Bowes to run into an open goal.

This game has risen a notch this quarter. A finals classic is brewing.

8.28pm

Port take the lead

This has been a decent response from Port Adelaide, who were hanging on in the first quarter but now find themselves in the lead early in the second term.

Goals to Willie Rioli, from a brilliant snap, and another opportunist’s goal by Jed McEntee has given Port the lead for the first time tonight.

The centre clearance is vital.
