The latest on the race for Dan Houston

SEN's Sam Edmund believes Carlton isn't without a shot at Dan Houston at this stage, despite Collingwood being the frontrunner.

"Dan Houston absolutely wants to play for the Blues," he told SEN's Whateley.

"The problem at the moment is that Carlton aren't presenting the best option or offer for the player.

"Collingwood have the inside running in regards to the John Noble deal."

To trade or not to trade?

A player wants out of a contract, or has reached a free agent status, and the football club is making it hard. Whilst I understand the need for hard bargaining to get the best deal, surely if a player who has expressed a wish to move on to another club, if this does not occur, then the club has to worse off. Nothing like a disgruntled player next season who does only what has to be done to be paid. He will only drag his club and his teammates down.

Hi Ken, thanks for the comment!

It's definitely an interesting conundrum isn't it? We've seen teams hold players to their contracts and it working out in the past, a great example being Ryan O'Keefe with Sydney.

My take is this - if you've got a great culture where it is really team-first, like the Swans have, it's much easier to welcome a guy back in who's previously asked out. The Swans did it with Tom Papley a few years ago as well.

If it's a shakier culture, say Essendon with Joe Daniher in 2020, it's a lot harder to turn that situation around.

Western Bulldogs under the gun over tough trade stance

Western Bulldogs list manager Sam Power is a shrewd negotiator and showed it again yesterday.

Power has not been afraid to play hardball in years' past, and looks like he's digging his heels in this year too as Bailey Smith, Jack Macrae and Caleb Daniel look for moves elsewhere.

All three players are moving for greater opportunities, and Kane Cornes can't quite understand how the Bulldogs are valuing Macrae and Daniel so highly after Dogs coach Luke Beveridge played them sparingly this season.
