North to be given pick three for McKayBy Marc McGowan

North Melbourne have been given pick three as free agency compensation for departing defender Ben McKay, two club sources have told this masthead.

The Kangaroos are yet to formally accept the compensation but they are not expected to match Essendon’s offer for McKay. They have until Friday 10 am to decide.

Should they accept the compensation, the Kangaroos will have picks two, three, 15 and 21 in this year’s draft plus two end of first-round selections next year as part of the AFL’s assistance package, leaving them well-placed for a crack at West Coast’s pick one.

McKay, at 202 cm, bolsters a Bombers defence that struggled to contain the star key forwards this season. The key defender played 71 games in eight seasons for the Kangaroos, who selected him with pick 21 in the 2015 draft. McKay won only eight games in his time at North.

The Dons are working on a deal for backman Brandon Zerk-Thatcher to head to Port Adelaide. This could also involve Port wingman Xavier Duursma, who wants to become a Bomber.

A note on our trade coverage

Our journalists speak to a range of player managers, club list managers and other officials to bring you trusted trade news. Often, those people don’t want to be named because they are in confidential negotiations with clubs or players, and because players’ livelihoods, club strategies and salaries are involved.

The moment Mitchell knew his time at Hawthorn was over

This from Collingwood midfielder Tom Mitchell on why he requested a trade out of Hawthorn 12 months ago will raise a few eyebrows.

Mitchell, part of the Pies’ premiership team this year, won a Brownlow at Hawthorn in 2018 but fell out of favour under Sam Mitchell as the Hawks planned for the future.

He detailed a team review where he felt he was targeted for unfair criticism.

“There was this one particular meeting I remember — and I don’t want to come across as [though] I’m complaining; this is more just how I was feeling and how I felt I was being made to feel,” Mitchell said on his Ball Magnets podcast.

“There was a meeting in particular, a game review, a chat with Dylan Moore, Finn Maginness, Will Day, these guys who are some of my good mates still. We call it the Tom Mitchell game review. That was the signed, sealed, delivered. I knew after that meeting I’m not coming back here next year, whatever happens I’m not coming to Hawthorn.

“There was a game review where there was something like five or so clips of just me. There were a few that were fair ... but I got barrelled in this meeting. All five clips, that was the meeting done, and I walked out of that thinking, ‘Are you serious? This is unprofessional, unfair, made me feel like absolute shit in front of everyone’, and that happened a few times.”

The Bulldogs pick swap - what history says about pick four

The Western Bulldogs’ pick swap with Gold Coast to get to No.4 in the draft order was one of the major talking points from yesterday.

The Dogs traded out both their round one picks (10 and 17) and their future round one pick to the Gold Coast for the Suns’ round one pick (four), both round three picks (46 and 51) and their future round three pick.

Any pick inside the top five should, in theory anyway, deliver a high-quality player. The Dogs should know with pick four. Marcus Bontempelli, their captain and possibly the greatest ever player to pull on the red, white and blue, was a pick four.

Bear in mind, the Dogs’ pick at No.4 could get pushed back one or two depending on North Melbourne’s free agency compensation for Ben McKay and potential bids on Gold Coast’s academy guns.

Day one trade wrap

Here’s our wrap from the first day of trade period.

Just a year after bringing in the player who would go on to win this year’s Norm Smith Medal, the Magpies have again targeted a small forward with Dockers goal sneak Lachie Schultz requesting a trade to the new premiers.

Collingwood last year recruited small forward Bobby Hill and key target Dan McStay to reshape their forward line and this year look to go further with the 25-year-old Docker wanting a move to Victoria.
