7.30AM - DETAILS ON DUURSMA’S POWER DEPARTURE REVEALED
Port Adelaide legend Kane Cornes has revealed Xavier Duursma’s departure from the club stems from his desire to play more midfield time.
Duursma on Monday requested a trade to Essendon as one of several players to land at the Bombers ahead of a busy trade period for both them and the Power.
Speaking on AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday morning, Cornes said Duursma discussed with Port at his exit meeting the possibility of spending more minutes on the ball in 2024, before it was decided he’d be better served doing so elsewhere.
“What led to his exit was his exit meeting at Port Adelaide ... he sat down and said: ‘I’m after more midfield time’,” Cornes began.
“They were pretty honest with him and said: ‘Look, we don’t see you breaking into the midfield. We’ve got Willem Drew, Connor Rozeee, Zak Butters, Jason Horne-Francis and Ollie Wines. We don’t think you’ll get in front of that group. Your best option here is to play on the wing’.
“I don’t think he was that happy with that and they said if you want to explore some more opportunities through the midfield, it’s probably best you do that at another club. That was the catalyst for him exploring his options and speaking to other clubs.”

Duursma was drafted by the Power with Pick 18 in the 2018 National Draft, but hasn’t quite performed to the same heights as fellow first-round draftees Rozee and Butters.
Western Bulldogs legend Brad Johnson said Duursma would be potentially competing for a “rotation only” in Essendon’s midfield behind mainstays Zach Merrett and Darcy Parish.
“He has to play minutes on the wing, for me that’s his sweet spot as a position,” he said.
“He could become one of the best wingmen in the competition if he was really dedicated to that one particular role – and we understand how important wingmen are these days.
“For Duursma to become a midfielder, he has to then maybe play as a half-forward as well part of that rotation ... if he’s playing midfield minutes at the Bombers, it wouldn’t be more than 25 per cent.
“Maybe it’s 25 per cent more than he was going to get at Port Adelaide, so maybe that sits alright in his mind.”
6AM - DOCKER SHOCKER TIPPED TO SPARK RACE FOR PIES FAVOURITE AS SAINT GAINS INTEREST
The biggest surprise of the official AFL trade period dropped on Monday evening when Fremantle forward Lachie Schultz lodged a trade request to get to Collingwood.
Schultz plays a unique role, something of a tall small forward, combining excellent pressure but isolated one-on-one abilities - the latter similar to Jamie Elliott - but if his move to the Magpies is completed, it’s expected to place more pressure on Jack Ginnivan to hold his spot in Craig McRae’s best side.
That’s why multiple clubs are tipped to explore Ginnivan’s ability over the coming days, reports AFL Media.
The 20-year-old is contracted for the 2024 season but was named in the starting side just nine times in 2023, including the Grand Final win over Brisbane.
Freo worries as Schultz requests trade | 03:17
Schultz is a free agent after the 2024 season, after being delisted in 2020, with the Dockers tipped to drive a hard bargain for the Victorian.
Meanwhile St Kilda wingman Dan McKenzie has gathered interest from multiple clubs with Gold Coast currently the keenest, reports AFL Media.
McKenzie hasn’t played at senior level since last June due to a series of calf issues but when fit under former coach Brett Ratten was a first-choice player.
The 27-year-old is yet to be offered a contract for next season at the Saints meaning he looms as a priority delisted free agent option for opposition sides, at the very least.
