STATE OF PLAY: Every player your club is targeting, and how deals get done

12PM - GRAHAM MOVE SET TO GO THROUGH

Two-time Richmond premiership player Jack Graham is set to officially become an Eagle in the next hour or two.

The 26-year-old played 131 games across eight seasons at Punt Road, but like several of his teammates, has requested a trade away from the club amid a rebuild.

Graham’s departure looks very likely trigger band two or three compensation for the Tigers, with the former criteria handing the Tigers an end of first round draft pick.

He will sign a four-year deal at West Coast, as per Channel 7’s Ryan Daniels last night.

11.15AM – BIG ‘PROBLEM’ STOPPING BLUES FROM LANDING STAR

Carlton isn’t presenting Port Adelaide with “the best option or offer” for Dan Houston, according to SEN reporter Sam Edmund, who says Collingwood has the “inside running” in the race for the dual All-Australian.

The Blues currently hold Pick 12 at November’s national draft – and the industry-wide feeling is that selection would help satisfy the Power in a possible Houston trade.

But Carlton insists it wants to use that pick next month at the national draft to select a talented young player.

Instead, the Blues are in the race for Gold Coast’s Pick 13, which is up for grabs as the Suns anticipate a bid on academy star Leo Lombard to come before that selection.

Suns list boss Craig Cameron on Monday said his club would “take the best deal we can” for Pick 13, adding they’d “like to deal with clubs that have players we want”.

And with Collingwood’s John Noble requesting a trade to Gold Coast, the Magpies are well placed to negotiate with the Suns – as Noble could be part of the Pick 13 trade discussion – and, therefore, seen as the frontrunners in the race for Houston.

“Dan Houston absolutely wants to play for the Blues,” Edmund told SEN’s Whateley.

“The problem at the moment is that Carlton aren’t presenting the best option or offer for the player.

“Collingwood have the inside running in regards to the John Noble deal.”

North Melbourne has also been strongly linked to Houston, who hasn’t nominated a preferred club yet.

Kangaroos list boss Brady Rawlings on Monday declared his club was “still in the hunt” for Houston

“We’ve met with Dan. It’ll come down to whoever has the best value for Port Adelaide. We think we’re still a chance,” he said.

Rawlings wouldn’t confirm reports the Kangaroos had offered the Power two first-round picks for Houston, saying: “I’m not sure there’s been an asking price. It’s whoever comes up with the best deal.”

Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd questioned whether North was being “used” to create a bidding war.

“I wouldn’t be throwing two first-rounders at Dan Houston, but I think that’s what it may take for clubs to get him,” Lloyd said on the 3AW trade podcast.

“That’s where I think North Melbourne will probably get blown out of a water … They can probably afford to do it, but I just think Dan Houston, is he just using them as well as a way to have another club involved?

“He’d want Carlton or Collingwood. He wants to win a premiership, Dan Houston.

“It all comes down to who can get the Gold Coast Suns’ pick 13 … Whoever can get that unlocks the deal to get Dan Houston.”

9AM – STILL AN OLIVER TWIST LEFT?

A Clayton Oliver trade to Geelong isn’t off the table yet, according to 3AW host Sam McClure, despite the Cats and Demons’ public statements on the opening day of the trade period.

Three days after interim Demons president Brad Green declared Oliver would be at the opening centre bounce for the club’s first game next season, Melbourne list boss Tim Lamb shut down the possibility of Oliver playing at another club in 2025.

“Claz is a Melbourne person. He knows how valuable he is. We’re really proud of Clayton and how far he’s come this year, and we’re really looking forward to him having a terrific season next year,” Lamb told reporters.

“Simon (Goodwin) and Alan (Richardson) have been in constant contact with Clayton and he’s totally aware of the situation and he’s looking forward to next season.”

But Lamb said it was “inaccurate” to suggest the Demons had “shopped” Oliver around, despite multiple reports club chief executive Gary Pert had reached out to rival clubs about their interest levels in the four-time best and fairest winner – a move that helped prompt Oliver to meet with key Geelong figures last week.

Clayton situation 'has been a shambles' | 03:44

Cats list boss Andrew Mackie, who was one of the Geelong officials that caught up with Oliver, said his club was “really clear and respectful of Melbourne’s position”, adding: “Melbourne has come out and said what they have, so let’s put it to bed.”

But speaking on his radio show on Monday night, McClure said Oliver was still keen to get to the Cats and that there was a “50-50 chance” a trade could go through.

“I don’t think they have (had it out). I think there are two different schools of thought here,” McClure told 3AW’s Wide World Of Sports on Monday night.

“I don’t think Geelong publicly is the same as Geelong privately.

“I still think there are parties, behind the scenes as we speak, working on a deal to get Clayton Oliver to Geelong.

“It seems to me a narrative was sold to everyone today, including to Melbourne members, that ‘we’ve had it out, we’ve chatted to him, he’s understanding that it’s not going to happen’. I would dispute that.”

6AM - CASHED-UP KANGAS READY TO ‘DOUBLE’ DOG’S DEAL IN TRIPLE PREMIERSHIP STAR BID

North Melbourne is willing to hand Bulldogs veteran Caleb Daniel a four-year deal in order to lure him across to Arden Street, as the small defender continues to weigh up a trade request.

Seven’s Mitch Cleary reports the Kangaroos are trying to complete a triple raid for premiership players - along with Jack Darling and Luke Parker - using their banked salary cap room to try and accelerate a rebuild that is yet to get out of first gear.

That would include “doubling” Daniel’s existing contract at the Western Bulldogs if he’s willing to request a trade and make the move to the Kangaroos.

The 28-year-old rarely played at senior level in 2024, falling out of Luke Beveridge’s preferred side with seven games as the substitute and eight appearances in the VFL.

“The Roos are keen to spend some of their salary cap room, something they haven’t done in recent times,” Cleary said on Seven.

“Daniel spent the weekend in Adelaide with his family as he weighs up his call. He has two years left on his deal at the Kennel - it’s understood the Roos will double that to four years if he decides to join.

“The 28-year-old is unlikely to officially request a trade unless he knows a deal can get done.”

Dual All-Australian Leigh Montagna said Daniel would be a shrewd acquisition for North.

“They’ve got Jack Darling and Luke Parker, so do they want a third experienced veteran? I think he’s probably an upgrade on Darcy Tucker and Zac Fisher, who play similar roles” Montagna said on Fox Footy’s Trading Day.

“It might allow Colby McKercher to explore a wing, half-forward or inside role, so I think they should have a crack at him.”

Herald Sun reporter Scott Gullan told Fox Footy the Bulldogs “are hopeful that he stays”.

“I think they’ve turned their tune a bit and fallen back in love with Caleb Daniel,” Gullan told Fox Footy’s Trading Day.

“He’d work brilliantly at North, but the gut feel I’ve got is he stays.”

The other premiership Bulldog who spent much of the season either out of the side or in the sub’s vest, Jack Macrae, is keen to get to St Kilda.

“We’ve put our vision forward to him and hopefully hear from him (Daniel) soon,” North Melbourne list manager Brady Rawlings said on Monday.

“Another player we’d like to bring to the club - looking for a bit more rebounding and decision-making off halfback, and we think we can get that through Caleb.”

Bulldogs list boss Sam Power said: “There’s no indication from Caleb or his management he wants to play anywhere else next year.

“Caleb’s a required player, he’s got two more years on a contract, he’s a (deputy) vice-captain of the club.”
