Amy McDonald will play her 50th AFLW game against Melbourne on Saturday night
Amy McDonald’s footballing story is one full of brilliance and consistency, with the star midfielder set to notch another milestone when she plays her 50th AFLW game this weekend.
A true leader of Geelong’s on-ball division, McDonald is a three time Cats Best and Fairest winner and an All-Australian, achieving all this within her first five seasons in the AFLW.
Widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the competition, McDonald possesses a unique ability to spin out of trouble and weave through traffic.
McDonald’s story in the hoops started back in 2019 when she spent a season with the Cats VFLW side, playing 14 games and earning a VFLW team of the year selection.
The impressive season helped the on-baller to get a crack at the top level, being selected by Geelong with pick 80 in the 2019 AFLW draft.
It took no time for McDonald to work her way into the starting line-up, debuting in the opening round of 2020 and proceeding to cement her spot in the team across the rest of the season.
2021 saw the star midfielder take her game to new heights, winning her first Geelong Best and Fairest award, finishing with 71 votes which was nearly double the vote tally of second place.
The following year saw McDonald continue her ascension into the top echelon of AFLW players, winning the Cats season six and season seven Best and Fairest awards in 2022.
Season seven also saw the 26 year old selected in the AFLW All Australian team, after averaging 21 disposals, eight tackles and six clearances per game.
McDonald’s game continued to evolve in 2023, again averaging well over 20 disposals and six clearances per game while forming a formidable midfield partnership with Georgie Prespakis and Nina Morrison.
After kicking three goals across her first four AFLW seasons McDonald had a big scoreboard impact last year, kicking two important goals in Geelong’s Semi-Final win over Melbourne.
McDonald would go on to finish equal runner-up in the 2023 AFLW Best and Fairest award.
Entering her sixth season at the top level, the brilliant midfielder will once again be a crucial asset in the Cats line-up as they look to build another successful campaign in 2024.
