Local services marketplace Airtasker is launching in Manchester to help drive its economy and provide relief amid the cost-of-living crisis for residents.

Since its initial launch in London, Airtasker has enabled users to earn a few hundred extra pounds a week working part-time to more than £40K annually full-time.

The marketplace is now expanding to Manchester, following a recent successful launch in Birmingham, making it easier for people to get tasks done while providing locals with opportunities to earn extra income by offering their time and skills.

From DIY to painting and furniture assembly, to gardening and landscaping, to pick up and delivery, to removals and house cleaning, to car washing to pet care – the open marketplace model means there is an endless number of categories and tasks to choose from.

‘Taskers’ (those offering their skills) are rated and reviewed by ‘Posters’ (those requesting tasks), allowing Taskers to build their portfolio from the ground up. As they gain experience and positive reviews, Taskers can become top-rated, increasing their chances of winning more jobs. On the flipside, Posters get to choose Taskers based on skills, reviews, location, timings, and budget.

Ben, 26 years old from Stockport, recently signed up to become a Tasker. He said: “I was training as an engineer and now have a full-time job. I signed up to boost my income on Airtasker and do a variety of jobs including car repair work and waste removals. I’ve made £300 off just one task and already using it weekly which has helped give me financially stability.”

You can find out how much you can earn via the Airtasker Side Hustle Calculator.

This includes (based on one job a week):

Carpentry – £381 Car washing – £229 Furniture assembly – £208 Gardening – £277 Handyperson – £312 House cleaning – up to £204 Pet care – £260 Removals & moving services – £239 Rubbish removal – £173 Sewing and clothing repair – £121 Washing and ironing – £142

In August 2024 alone the platform saw a 435% increase in tasker sign ups. With news of the recent increase in private rental prices in Manchester rising by 12.4% in just one year and both the unemployment rate and count increased for the second consecutive period (Apr 2023 – Mar 2024) to 6.5% Airtasker is hoping to ease the financial pressures on the city.

Douglas Toy, Airtasker’s UK general manager, said: “Manchester is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading entrepreneurial hubs, making it a key focus. Our mission is to empower Mancunians to maximise their skills, enable people to work independently and help create jobs for the future. By providing truly flexible earning opportunities, we’ve already seen Taskers make over £1,000 in just one week across different tasks.”
