The agent of Gold Coast star AJ Brimson said that a deleted social media post allegedly showing him winning big on the Melbourne Cup - next to what appears to be a bet on a rugby league fixture - was placed by a family member.

The NRL is investigating after it was made aware of an image, which has been deleted from his Instagram account. The image appears to show Brimson winning a $100 wager placed on Melbourne Cup winner Knights Choice at $101, for a collect of $10,100.

The NRL is aware of an image allegedly posted by AJ Brimson.

Below the wager appears to be another bet, which is obscured, prompting questions as to whether it may have been placed on a rugby league match.

Registered NRL participants, including players, are prevented from betting on rugby league matches under the game’s code of conduct.

However, Brimson’s manager, Jim Banaghan, said the bet was placed by a family member and Brimson posted it to make it look like he’d won big on the Melbourne Cup as a joke.

“A family member sent it to him, he copied it and posted it,” Banaghan told this masthead.

“I have the whole [text] conversations [with the family member], they will be sent to the [NRL] integrity unit and it will all be hit on the head straight away.

“I’ve given it to the CEO of the club (Steve Mitchell) and he has given it to the integrity commission.

“There’s nothing to it … it was all a bit of a wind-up and it has just backfired.”

The Titans issued the following statement: “The Gold Coast Titans have referred a social media post made by AJ Brimson to the NRL’s Integrity Unit. The club can’t comment further on this matter at this time.”

In 2017, Wests Tigers centre Tim Simona was found to have bet on league matches. As a result, the NRL deregistered Simona over a range of breaches, including betting against his team winning and on opposition players scoring against his team.
