Swiatek soars past Samsonova into quarter-finals

While de Minaur was winning his match, women’s world No.1 Iga Świątek was cruising past Liudmila Samsonova to booker her spot in the quarter-finals.

Świątek will play American Jessica Pegula – a player she has a chequered success rate against.

The two have traded wins the past four times they’ve played, but Świątek has the upper hand overall with six wins to Pegula’s three.

Tommy teaches Sinner a lesson

Over to Arthur Ashe Stadium for a moment, because American Tommy Paul is giving world No.1 Jannik Sinner a schooling.

Paul is up 4-1 in the first set and the New York crowd is loving it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see this match go to five sets. Sinner knows how to claw a match back into his hands, but Paul is using the home crowd to his advantage.

Thompson exits the 2024 US Open

Jordan Thompson might not have the win, but he’ll leave with a nice prize purse and ranking points.

He should easily crack the top 30 when the new rankings come out next Monday.

De Minaur had some nice words to say about Thompson after the match.

“I’ve got so much respect for Tomo, we’ve grown up together, he’s been like a big brother to me,” de Minaur said.

“I really appreciate everything he’s done for me, and he’s a hell of a competitor, my Davis Cup teammate and I can’t wait to share the court many, many times with him.”

Demon takes on Draper next

Not the most comprehensive victory of Alex de Minaur’s career, but the important thing is he got the job done.

He found a way to win even when he wasn’t playing his best tennis, and he was able to keep calm under pressure.

As mentioned before, he lays Brit Jack Draper in the quarter-finals – a player he has beaten all three times they’ve played. Their quarter-final will be a bit different though because they’ve never faced each other in a tournament where it’s best of five sets.

De Minaur gets win against Thompson in four sets

Game, set and match.

Alex de Minaur will play Jack Draper in the men’s quarter-finals after beating fellow countryman Jordan Thompson 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in just under three hours.

It wasn’t smooth finish to the night, with de Minaur finding his seventh double fault in the final game of the match, but the world No. 10 found an ace before drawing an error from Thompson to secure victory.

De Minaur to serve for the match

De Minaur gets the break to go up 6-5 in the fourth set and serve for the match.

It was a beautiful backhand down the line from de Minaur followed by an error from Thompson that closed out that game.

This match is on de Minaur’s racquet now, and he should be good enough to close it out.
