All Blacks player ratings v Italy: 'Deadly' back 'up to his usual tricks ...
Following their 29-11 victory over Italy, here are our All Blacks player ratings after an entertaining game at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.
All Blacks player ratings15 Will Jordan: Such a deadly attacker, and he was up to his usual tricks again against Italy as he overtook the great Jonah Lomu’s try tally with a classy effort. He managed to slice through the stubborn Italian defence on multiple occasions and generated plenty of chances for his side as a result. 8
14 Mark Tele’a: Looked a serious threat when given the ball, and in standard fashion managed to find some decent holes in the defence. Put the cherry on top with a try as well. 7
13 Rieko Ioane: A relatively quiet performance, especially compared to his previous showings this Autumn Nations Series, but still came up with a few decent charges. 6
12 Anton Lienert-Brown: Had big boots to fill with Jordie Barrett out of action, but he couldn’t get a proper foothold into the game. Copped a cheap yellow too and didn’t return. 4
Wales player ratings v Springboks: Defensive ‘bulldozer’ only bright spark on ‘woeful day’ for Warren Gatland’s men
11 Caleb Clarke: Came up with a couple of nice touches in attack, but on the whole, was well-managed by the solid Azzurri defence. 5
10 Beauden Barrett: Should be fairly content with his evening’s work, without setting the pitch alight. Came up with some creative flourishes, especially from the boot, and got the likes of Ioane and Jordan attacking through holes. 6
9 Cam Roigard: Yet again showed why he is the heir to Aaron Smith. He was able to inject some serious fizz into a stagnant, clunky attack when it was desperately needed, and grabbed a nice try for his efforts. 7
Back-row8 Ardie Savea: Not his greatest game in the famous black jersey, but he was still strong. He wasn’t able to have as much of an effect ball-in-hand, but he got heavily involved in the defensive efforts against a revved-up Italian pack and appeared to spawn in every breakdown. 6
7 Sam Cane: A typically industrious Sam Cane performance to end his illustrious Test career. He got stuck into the ugly work when his side needed him most and just worked incredibly hard. The All Blacks will certainly miss him. 6
6 Wallace Sititi: Another fine performance from the breakthrough star. Managed to make plenty of line breaks, as you expect from him, and that played a pivotal role in getting the All Blacks back on the upper hand. 7
Tight five5 Patrick Tuipulotu: Wasn’t able to replicate his heroics of the previous Tests, but solid nonetheless. Added some grunt to proceedings. 6
Springboks player ratings: ‘Brutal’ South Africa pack ‘obliterate’ Wales as backs ‘dazzle’ in an emphatic end to the year
4 Scott Barrett: Could easily have copped a red for his croc roll, but his calm and composed head was a key reason they held off a competitive Azzurri. 6
3 Tyrel Lomax: Immensely powerful in the scrum, and really helped turn it into a weapon to get his side back in the game when Italy looked to have the upper hand. Also made decent work for himself around the park. 7
2 Codie Taylor: A very busy shift, and rounds off a solid year for the hooker. He came up with some crucial interventions to keep the attack alive, and gave a solid platform at the set-piece. 6
1 Ethan de Groot: A nice way to end a pretty tough tour for the loosehead. Did pretty well in the scrum, and made some dents in the Italian line too. 6
Replacements: The bench has been a real talking point for the All Blacks this year, good or bad, but tonight they certainly had a good game on the whole. Asafo Aumua, Ofa Tu’ungafasi and Fletcher Newell took over directly from where De Groot, Taylor and Lomax left off in the scrum, and just tore the Italians apart in this area. Tupou Vaa’i and Peter Lakai also made themselves pretty busy around the park too. In the back division, Damian McKenzie, David Havili and the outgoing TJ Perenara also came on and had a decent impact on the attack. Havili, in particular, really added a fresh dynamic they had been missing in the opening stages of the game. McKenzie was also deployed at 15 on his arrival, and the attack looked far better with him in that spot as his playmaking skills looked to get Tele’a and Jordan involved. Again, 16 to 23 has been a real issue for Scott Robertson, but he appears to have rapidly fixed his key issue. 7
