The co-main event on the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight card was overshadowed by controversy as Katie Taylor defended her undisputed lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Amanda Serrano (95-94 x3).

UFC 309: JONES VS MIOCIC | Heavyweight champion and all-time great Jon Jones will defend his title against former champion Stipe Miocic | SUN 17 NOV 2PM AEDT | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. Main Event on Kayo Sports and Foxtel is the exclusive home of UFC Pay-Per-View.

The pair last fought over two years ago, when Taylor took a similarly close fight by split decision, and the rematch certainly lived up to expectations in an epic 12-round war.

However, Taylor was accused by Serrano’s trainer Jordan Maldonado of fighting “dirty” after being pulled up by the referee for multiple headbutts.

Taylor was eventually deducted a point but that still wasn’t enough to see Serrano, who suffered a deep cut as a result of one of the headbutts, claim the victory.

Speaking after the fight, Taylor said she “certainly wasn’t fighting dirty”.

“Sometimes it gets rough in there,” she added.

Serrano though, while classy in defeat when initially asked about whether she agreed with the decision, even conceded that she believed Taylor had been deliberately headbutting her.

“Everytime you get a cut it bothers you,” she said.

“You get blood in your eye, it hurts. She kept headbutting me and that’s something she has done before. I think 100 per cent (the headbutts were deliberate).

“It’s not the first time. She did it to me, she did it to Cameron. It is what it is. I’m a champion no matter what.”

That was just the start of the controversy though, with Serrano seemingly doing enough to take the win or, at minimum, have at least made it a split decision.

Serrano landed 324 of 734 punches in the fight compared to 217 of 529 for the champion.

“I cannot sit here... you cannot take anything away from Katie Taylor and her legacy... but my god how does one rob Amanda Serrano like that?” Mauro Ranallo said in commentary.

The crowd was certainly not happy with the decision either, booing as Taylor declared “I don’t care if the commentary team or the crowd disagree with the result”.

“The only thing that matters is the judges,” she said, adding she “didn’t agree” with the point deduction.
