Glen Powell, 35, is the romcom man of the moment as his film Anyone But You has quickly become a must-watch festive flick. Rumours about his relationship status with co-star Sydney Sweeney refuse to die down too, despite both of them denying it – and Sweeney being happily engaged to someone else.

Powell seems to remain grounded while in the limelight thanks to the support of his family. Powell described his parents, Glen Powell Sr and Cyndy, to Nylon in 2014 as a “huge rowdy Texas crew who gets me in all the right kinds of trouble”. Together with his two sisters, Lauren and Leslie, this is the crew Powell calls family.

Family film cameos

American actor Glen Powell and his lookalike mum

If you’re a Powell fan, you’ll know that the actor always tries to get his parents into his films as extras. Per People, Cyndy had a role as an adult spy in Spy Kids 3, a lunch lady in Everybody Wants Some!! and a professor in Jack & Bobby. Both of his parents played a couple walking on the beach in Devotion. His mum also has a role in his latest flick Anyone But You, of course.

Relationship inspiration

Glen Powell shares a close bond with his parents

In an interview with Bustle, Powell said he looks up to his parents and their relationship. He said his parents have been together for more than four decades and commented on their determination to make things work: “The older I get, the more I look at my parents with awe at the fact that it’s really hard for love to survive 40 years in this world.” Powell broke up with long-time girlfriend Gigi Paris earlier this year.

Powell has admitted it would be difficult for him to date because of his career. Powell Sr confirmed as much, per Bustle, saying, “It will happen, for sure, but it’s a hard thing to see from his perspective. It’s hard [for him] to know what’s real, what’s not.”

Glen Powell and Top Gun: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise

It’s no secret that Powell and his parents share a close bond. In the Bustle interview, Powell Sr spoke about how he and Cyndy felt when their son lost the role of Rooster in Maverick – but there were bigger things on the horizon.

Powell Sr recounted how his son received a call from Tom Cruise about another part in the film. Powell Sr and Cyndy were on the line with Powell while driving to Glacier National Park. Powell hung up to take Cruise’s call, and his parents pulled off on the side of the road, waiting for an hour so they could ensure they heard the news from their son. “Then he called us and he goes, ‘I’m going to do Top Gun!’ I mean, [we were] literally, on the edge of the road and on the edge, but you never stop being a parent,” gushed Powell Sr.

The Powell romantics

Powell Sr, an executive coach, also spoke about how his son asked his dad to assess him so that he could understand himself better when in a relationship. Powell Sr explained to Bustle that his son thinks an actor has “to be honest with who he is, what his strengths are, where some blind spots may be”. “But not everybody’s open to that,” Powell Sr added candidly.

Glen Powell’s parents have been married for 40 years

The actor also once attended an event in Washington DC – which just happens to be where his parents live, where they first began dating, and where they got engaged. The event coincided with his parents’ 40th anniversary, so Powell decided to invite them to come along.

His dad got down on one knee, reconstructing his engagement to his wife. Commenting on the moment, Powell said, “it’s really fun to see your parents be romantic. If I could have what my parents have, I’d be really, really happy.”

Dad power

When Top Gun: Maverick was released, Powell gave kudos to his dad by getting a matching Top Gun-themed outfit made for him. “Wingmen for life. We feel the need,” wrote the actor on Instagram alongside the photo of his dad in the outfit.

Powell plays “Hangman” in the flick and got his dad a matching outfit with the humorous moniker “Hangdad”.

Glen Powell and his sisters

Born in 1988, Powell is a middle child. His older sister Lauren was born in 1986 and regularly speaks about her life as a mum of twins on Instagram.

His younger sister Leslie was born in 1992. Leslie is a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles and Powell is a big supporter of hers, telling Nylon back in 2014, “Nothing puts me in a better mood than her music. Remember the name. She’s a star.”

According to Bustle, he grew up watching The Wedding Singer with his two sisters. He said they used to tease him about having the same name as the film’s bad guy, Glen Guglia.
