Netflix Drops Trailer for 'Apple Cider Vinegar' Series
Netflix’s upcoming series “Apple Cider Vinegar” is inspired by the true story of Belle Gibson, an Australian wellness influencer who falsely claimed to have cured her terminal brain cancer through health and wellness practices.
Belle’s story unraveled when it was revealed she had never been diagnosed with cancer. Despite this, she gained fame by sharing her fabricated journey through social media, a mobile app, and a companion cookbook.
Created by award-winning Australian writer Samantha Strauss (“Nine Perfect Strangers,” “Dance Academy”), the six-episode limited series examines the rise of wellness culture, Instagram’s early influence, and the unchecked power of social media during its formative years.
“It’s fascinating to explore how media uses food as a weapon and how wellness is both a privilege and a costly pursuit,” Strauss shared via Netflix Tudum.
The series stars Kaitlyn Dever as Gibson, delivering a convincing Australian accent praised by Strauss and dialect coach Jenny Kent. Alycia Debnam-Carey plays Milla Blake, another influencer promoting food as a cure for cancer, while Aisha Dee co-stars as Chanel, a friend who helps Gibson grow her brand. The ensemble cast includes Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Ashley Zukerman, Susie Porter, Matt Nable and Mark Coles Smith.
“Apple Cider Vinegar” draws inspiration from the book “The Woman Who Fooled the World” by journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano. Strauss, who followed Gibson’s story through reporting in The Age, filmed the series in Melbourne, showcasing locations from the city to the Dandenong Ranges.
Gibson gained prominence in the early 2010s with her app The Whole Pantry, which promoted healthy living and was named Apple’s Best Food and Drink App in 2013. Her claims were later debunked, leading to a $410,000 fine in 2017 for misleading consumers.
An official release date for the series has yet to be announced. In the meantime, you can check out the official trailer below.
