Another big ARIAs night for Troye Sivan

The homegrown superstar won two major categories last year (Best Solo Artist, Song of the Year). Tonight, Troye Sivan walks away with three pointy trophies: Album of the Year, Best Pop Release, and Best Solo Artist (again).

Currently touring the country, in what is essentially a victory lap, Sivan has been one of Australia's most consistent pop exports for years.

He got his start as a teen personality on YouTube, and first hit the top five on the Billboard 200 at age 19, with his 2014 EP, TRXYE.

He scored his first ARIA wins in 2016, winning Song of the Year and Best Video for his single Youth, then nominated multiple times over the years before finally coming good again last year around his mega-hit Rush.

Chances are very good we'll see him back at the winners podium again in future.

'Go have a one night stand'

Troye uses his acceptance speech to share an anecdote.

"I was going through a break-up and was really really depressed," he says.

"I meet a guy and have a one night stand with him and have this incredible connection."

Troye describes how it made him realise how many people were in the world and  the different connections he could have

"I write this album about this random stranger I never saw again," Troye says.

"Until I was at a wine bar in Melbourne."

Troye says he told the guy the album was about him.

"He looked very confused, he said 'the craziest thing is I'm going through a break-up and the album is getting me through a break-up'."

He finishes the speech with a piece of advice:

"Go have a one night stand with someone, you'll never know what could happen."

Album inspired by lockdowns

Just as quickly as he walked off stage Troye Sivan is back accepting the final ARIA of the night.

"What the hell," he starts again.

"I don't have anything to say - I said it all before."

He tells the crowd the album was inspired by moments between lockdowns in Melbourne.

That time Missy Higgins straddled David Hosselhoff

Missy Higgins made a big splash at the 2005 ARIA Awards when The Sound of White took home five pointy trophies. But also made headlines when she kissed, then leaped into the arms of guest host David "Baywatch/Knight Rider depending on your generation" Hasselhoff.

What sometimes gets overlooked is that Ben Lee smooched the Hoff first when he took to the podium for Single of the Year.

Missy was merely trying to upstage Lee, as she explained in a video package around her ARIA Hall of Fame induction.

"It was in that moment how deeply competitive Missy Higgins really is," Lee deadpans.

Artists honour Missy Higgins

We see a montage featuring a number of other Australian aritsts including Gretta Ray, Angie McMahon, Amy Shark, Dan Sultan, and Paul Kelly.

"She's authentic," Paul Kelly says in the video.

"She's such a trailblazer... so many Australian singer-songwriters,  women but all of us, owe so much to her," says Gretta Ray.

Hear hear. And you can read more about that impact from many more here:

G Flip scores Song of the Year

This category is voted on by the public, and despite the sizeable fan bases for Kylie Minogue, Troye Sivan and The Kid LAROI, the gong goes to G Flip.

The non-binary multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer was a highlight of last year's ARIAs but scored just one nod this year for their single The Worst Person Alive.

More like Best Person Alive, according to the fans, who also helped them score their first two ARIA Awards last year: Best Australian Live Act and Best Video.

This extends the public love for the break-up anthem, which reached #2 in triple j's Hottest 100 at the top of this year, G Flip breaking the record for the most entries in a single countdown. Read more on that achievement here:
