Manchester City's defeat to Liverpool on Sunday left Arne Slot's runaway leaders nine points clear at the summit.

The Gunners are their closest challengers along with Chelsea and have been in superb form over the past week, putting five goals past both Sporting CP and West Ham.

Sporting's malaise can be partly attributed to losing head coach Ruben Amorim, who is unbeaten in his first three matches in charge of United. After taking on Ipswich Town, Bodo/Glimt and Everton, this unquestionably represents the Portuguese tactician's most significant test in England to date.

Halftime

Well, that's that for now. United will be very happy with how that's played out. Given their efforts over the past 18 months or so, it feel vaguely unsettling to see them playing away to a major club with a plan and carrying it out. Arsenal started quickly but need to reset as they looked a bit like a team out of ideas as the half ticked down.

45 mins: Timber looking to barrel through, Malacia and Mazraoui hurl themselves in to disrupt things. Ugarte wants a booking for Saka's follow-through into Malacia and gets one himself.

43 mins: Ohhhhh, not far away! United on the attack, the ball breaks to Dalot inside the box from a narrow angle. He thrashes across goal and just beyond the far post.

40 mins: Restlessness among the home crowd. They don't like Onana taking his time on the ball but United have conspired to make this pretty frustrating for Arsenal, who will be loath to drop points if Liverpool continue to lose at Newcastle.

35 mins: Lovely piece of defending from Kiwior, who takes the ball off Hojlund's toe to thwart a rare position of attacking promise for United.

30 mins: Nope, lovely clean take from Onana. One for the goalkeeping purists.

29 mins: Saka has Malacia one-vs-one. Welcome back, young man. The Arsenal winger drills a cross against England team-mate Maguire. Strangled shouts for handball. Corner to the hosts. Will they make this one tell.

27 mins: The Arsenal fans want a yellow card for Mount. In fairness to him, he's just slipped over into Odegaard because it's suddenly absolutely hosing it down in north London.

25 mins: Onana is boxed in this time, Zinchenko gets to the second ball and Martinelli whips his shot just over.

22 mins: Onana does really well to get a meaty punch on the missile Saka sends zeroing in on his crossbar.

21 mins: United cough up possession in their own half but have the numbers back and Fernandes blocks behind. Saka to take.

20 mins: United haven't shown much as an attacking threat yet but they've established themselves in the contest and look solid out of possession.

13 mins: Now Zinchenko whips a devilish ball into the United area. Saka probably should have gambled as it skims out of a goal kick.

11 mins: Lovely deep, inswinging cross from Saka to the back post, where Dalot defends excellently for United with Martinelli lurking.

9 mins: Arsenal should be 1-0 up! They're missing their main man Gabriel from corners tonight but Partey to to the near post to attack Rice's delivery. The midfielder got his header horribly wrong.

4 mins: Arsenal have the ball in the net but the offside flag is up against Havertz. United made such a hash of their playing out from the back that the Germany forward did not have chance to get back onside before setting up Martinelli to convert.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Amorim and Arteta share a warm embrace. The former's Sporting CP knocked Arsenal out of the Europa League a couple of years ago. Off we go, United in their change strip of navy blue.

5 mins before kickoff: The players are in the tunnel. Here they come. Amazon Prime just showed a pre-match montage featuring Wenger, Beckham, Ferguson et al. Probably wasn't their aim but it did underline how this fixture isn't really the big deal it was 20 years ago. But with Arsenal as good as they have been since those glory days and United embarking on their latest new era, can we have a classic for the modern day tonight?

15 mins before kickoff: If Amorim is to mastermind a United success tonight, he'll have to overturn recent history. United are winless in six Premier League trips to the Emirates Stadium, losing five of those. Their most recent win came in December 2017, when the Red Devils were indebted to a goalkeeping masterclass from David de Gea.

30 mins before kickoff: It's a split slate in the Premier League tonight, with three matches already underway at 7:30 local time. Bernardo Silva has poached a close-range opener for beleaguered Manchester City against Nottingham Forest. Axel Disasi similarly hasn't wasted much time heading Chelsea in front at Southampton.

45 mins before kickoff: It really is a huge show of faith in Malacia, who is making his first Premier League start since May 2023. Just the small matter of Bukayo Saka to deal with for the Dutchman...

1 hour before kickoff: The United team is pretty eyebrow-raising, with six changes from Amorim. That includes starts for long-term injury strugglers Tyrell Malacia and Mason Mount. That could mean Bruno Fernandes in central midfield, with Mount and Alejandro Garnacho supporting Rasmus Hojlund in attack. Hojlund is preferred up front to Joshua Zirkzee despite the latter's two-goal showing against Everton.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in and there's a makeshift look to the Arsenal defence that might encourage Manchester United. Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori have been unable to make it, meaning Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko will combine on the left-hand side of defence.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: To an extent, Arsenal are making up for lost time. Specifically, time and distance lost to the league leaders in Martin Odegaard's absence. As the Norway playmaker nursed an ankle ligament injury, the Gunners slumped to four Premier League games without a win. Odegaard is back in situ and a briefly monochrome side are playing once again in glorious technicolor. Five goals against Sporting CP, five more against West Ham. United are early in their Amorim era but this will probably be a huge test of their robustness.

2 hours before kickoff. Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of one of the Premier League's marque fixtures. Arsenal have won all three of their matches since the November international break, scoring 13 goals in the process. Over the same period, United unbeaten in three outings under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Arteta confirmed after the win over West Ham that Bukayo Saka was "fine, no problems" but there are a couple of notable absentees following that win.

Riccardo Calafiori (knee) and Gabriel were each withdrawn against at the London Stadium and miss out here, with Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko giving the back four a slightly makeshift look. Mikel Merino missed the Hammers game with a knock and is back among the substitutes.

Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are both out for a few weeks due to knee injuries.

United are without both Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo who are serving suspensions for yellow-card accumulation, already picking up five bookings just 13 matches into the season.

Otherwise, the Red Devils are nearly at full strength. The only players facing injury issues are defenders Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof who are dealing with minor injuries and will need to pass a fitness test to be available for selection.

Leny Yoro is among the substitutes as he awaits his United debut but the XI that starts shows six changes from the 4-0 win over Everton, with Tyrell Malacia and Mason Mount surprise starters after their own injury ordeals.

Man United lineup (3-4-3, right to left): Onana (GK) — Mazraoui, De Ligt, Maguire — Dalot, Fernandes, Ugarte, Malacia — Mount, Hojlund, Garnacho

Injured: Evans (knock), Lindelof (leg), Shaw (undisclosed).Suspended: L. Martinez, Mainoo
