A police spokesperson said a man allegedly threw hot water in the face of Ashley Paul Griffith before walking over to punch Brett Peter Cowan in the face.

Griffith was taken to hospital for treatment for facial burns, while Cowan was assessed by Wolston Correctional Centre staff on site.

A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesperson said both men had made complaints.

Queensland Corrective Services said no officers were injured in the incident and the matter had been referred to the Corrective Services Investigation Unit.

Griffith was publicly identified this week as the former Queensland childcare worker accused of sexually abusing 91 children, under new Queensland laws.

The changes were made in an effort to to amplify the voices of victim-survivors.

Mr Griffith has been in custody in Queensland since August, 2022, when the Australian Federal Police (AFP) arrested and charged him on two counts of making child exploitation material and one count of using a carriage service for child abuse material.

The Gold Coast man is facing more than 1,600 child sex offences, including rape and indecent treatment of a child, stemming from a major Australian Federal Police investigation.

Police allege the offences were committed between 2007 and 2022 while Mr Griffith was working in 10 childcare centres in Brisbane, one in Sydney and one overseas.

His case was adjourned in August to November 6.

Brett Peter Cowan is serving a life sentence for the 2003 murder of 13-year-old Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe.
