Smith made a blistering start, incredibly reeling off six straight birdies after an early bogey on his third hole of the round, while last weekend’s Australian PGA Champion Elvis Smylie struggled early to be +3 but found his groove with four straight birdies of his own among Smith’s scintillating run.

Another Aussie who lit up Victoria is Smith’s Ripper GC teammate Lucas Herbert, who concluded a stellar opening round of -8 with an eagle on his last hole to give him the outright lead.

But at Kingston Heath, 21-year-old Japanese rookie professional Rintaro Nakano stole the show.

The 21-year-old carded a -7 par 65 in the first round to enter the clubhuse as joint leader before Herbert’s late eagle.

Australian Su Oh had a tough year only featuring in three LPGA events but is all ready lapping up a return home as she’s jumped out in front as the one to catch in the women’s field with an excellent round so far at Kingston Heath.

Australian LPGA stars Minjee Lee and Steph Kyriacou are in the group behind Smith and Smylie, and have had contrasting fortunes to start the tournament.

There is plenty of other action taking place on what promises to be a busy day of golf as the men’s, women’s and All Abilities events are played at the same time across the two courses, but in different groups and from different tees.
