Drew McIntyre vs. CM Punk inside Hell in a Cell

CM Punk beat Drew McIntyre in a violent, awesome opener and an all-time classic Hell in a Cell match.

CM Punk and Drew McIntyre are the frontrunners for the 2024 WWE feud of the year, and the ultimate honor for a blood feud is for the end to come inside Hell in a Cell. Due to the star power, quality of the feud and pageantry of the cell, many fans felt Hell in a Cell should close the show. Instead, Punk and McIntyre opened Bad Blood with the same Hell in a Cell match that got its start on October 5, 1997. Exactly 27 years ago.

To open such a heated pay-per-view is still an honor, as the opening and closing matches are the two most prestigious spots on a pay-per-view. During the winter years of Vince McMahon, WWE bastardized Hell in a Cell, not only by changing its color, but also by booking an annual Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. As a result, WWE Superstars competed in the iconic cage just because it was that time of year and not because there was a grudge that only Satan’s Structure could contain.

Drew McIntyre has trolled his way to the top of WWE, while CM Punk’s redemption tour has gone swimmingly after a bitter divorce in 2014. All that’s left to do is for the two top stars to go to hell on each other. And go to hell on each other they did.

Drew McIntyre Vs. CM Punk | Everything That Happened In Hell In A Cell

CM Punk and Drew McIntyre stared daggers at one another as they slowly approached the middle of the ring. After a staredown, both rivals exchanged blows. Fans cheered when Punk took control, but booed when McIntyre attacked Punk.

CM Punk went for a table to a huge pop. The two then brawled on the outside, where Punk grabbed a wrench and used it on Drew McIntyre. Michael Cole said this will not be a five-star classic. By that he meant this match is happening outside of New Japan Pro Wrestling and AEW, so Dave Meltzer will downgrade it because of that.

Punk than went for one of the legs of the table and jabbed McIntyre with it before slamming Drew into the back of the table. The bloodthirsty crowd inside State Farm Arena chanted “one more time!”

McIntyre turned the tables, no pun intended, and tossed Punk outside. He then launched Punk face-first into the cage, causing Punk to bleed. McIntyre poured it on with a shot to the face with the steel steps.

The violence continued as McIntyre stomped on Punk’s face while his head was on the steel stair. As fans rallied behind Punk, McIntyre vowed Punk’s wife was going to leave him. McIntyre took hold of the wrench and stabbed Punk’s open wound as the Second City Saint bled more.

McIntyre set up a second table on the outside as referee Shawn Bennett assured Punk could continue.

Michael Cole pointed out the black armband Drew McIntyre was wearing on his left arm in honor of Punk’s funeral.

Fans chanted “this is awesome” as Punk kipped up. McIntyre went for the Claymore Kick and Punk moved out of the way. Fans surprisingly booed. As McIntyre went after Punk, Punk smashed Drew with a toolbox, causing McIntyre to bleed.

Punk unleashed a series of shots with the toolbox, followed by a GTS. Unfortunately, McIntyre rolled out of the ring.

Back in the ring, McIntyre went for a Claymore Kick but Punk moved out of the way, leading to a sharpshooter on a bloody McIntyre, shades of WrestleMania 13.

Drew McIntyre battled back yet again, with help from the wrench, and hit a suplex on Punk through the table on the outside. Fans were in a frenzy at this point, with yet another “this is awesome” chant.

McIntyre gingerly slid a steel step into the ring as he sold his back. Punk caught McIntyre in another GTS, but Drew kicked out. McIntyre hit White Noise on Punk on the steel stair for yet another nearfall.

Punk trapped McIntyre in an Anaconda Vice. McIntyre tried to use a wrench to strike Punk, but Punk apprehended the wrench and hammered Drew with the weapon. A bloody Drew begged off, but as Punk went for the decisive blow, Drew hit a low blow to a chorus of boos.

In yet another homage, this time to Hell in a Cell 1998, Drew McIntyre pulled out what seemed to be a bag of thumbtacks. They were not thumbtacks, they were plastic beads for a friendship bracelet. McIntyre missed a Claymore Kick and landed violently on the steel stair.

Punk wrapped his quad with a chain. He shoved the beads down McIntyre’s throat and hit a GTS with the chain for the win.
