Chaz Mostert secures pole position for Bathurst 1000 after producing fastest-ever time in Top 10 Shootout

Chaz Mostert has produced the fastest-ever time around the famed Mount Panorama circuit in a Top 10 Shootout to secure pole position for the Bathurst 1000.

Walkinshaw Andretti United star Chaz Mostert has smashed the lap record during a wild Top 10 Shootout to claim pole for the Bathurst 1000.

Key points:
  • Chaz Mostert clocked a time of two minutes 3.3736 seconds to earn pole position in Sunday's great race
  • It is the first time the 29-year-old will start a Bathurst 1000 from pole
  • Shell V-Power's Anton De Pasquale clinched second spot

Mostert put together a perfect drive around Mount Panorama on Saturday to produce a scorching time of 2 minutes, 3.3736 seconds

Winner of the 2014 Great Race, the 29-year-old Commodore driver eclipsed the record of 2:03.559s set by Ford flyer Cameron Waters last year.

It will be the first time Mostert has started a Bathurst 1000 from pole.

"When I heard the times from the other guys, I was like, 'wow, that's getting fast'," Mostert said.

"But I blocked it out, drove to the grip level, and the car has been really responsive.

"Pretty sure my dash was lying to me initially with the lap time gain.

"But I had a lot of fun out there."

Shell V-Power's Anton De Pasquale clinched second spot for Sunday's 161-lap race.

Waters appeared to have secured top spot on the grid for the second straight year after completing a stunning lap.

The Tickford driver almost came unstuck several times during his hot lap at Mount Panorama but managed to cross the line with a scorching time close to his record last year.

Erebus's Brodie Kostecki, who qualified fourth, was thrilled with his time: "Honestly, I couldn't give a shit anyone beats me, that's awesome."

Waters was up immediately following Kostecki and the 27-year-old managed to go to the top of the list briefly.

He made slight contact with the wall and appeared to almost lose control but managed to get his Mustang back on track.
