Paris 2024 beach volleyball: All results, as Ana Patricia and Duda ...
Brazil’s Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Edwarda ‘Duda’ Santos Lisboa won gold in beach volleyball, beating the Canadian team of Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes 2-1 under the Eiffel Tower on Friday, 9 August at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Underneath a glowing Eiffel Tower with ‘I ❤️ Paris’ written in the sand, the women’s beach volleyball gold medal match was thrilling and at times, tense.
While Canada had a strong start, the power and precise hitting from Brazil won them the first set. Canada roared back in the second set and for the first time in a women’s gold medal beach volleyball game, there was a third set.
This is where the tension came in. Duda and Wilkerson disagreed on a call in the third set and started to exchange words and gestures at the net. Their partners acted as peacemakers, as did the arena’s DJ, playing ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon. Wilkerson moved back into serving position after being shown a yellow card. As tempers cooled, fans swayed with their arms in the air, and even the Canadian had to laugh.
The kerfuffle seemed to focus Duda and Ana Patricia, as they quickly hit their way to 15 points to secure the win. The gold was the first one since 1996 for Brazilian women in beach volleyball. For Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes, their silver was the first one ever for Canadian women in the sport.
In earlier action, Switzerland’s Tanja Hueberli and Nina Brunner won 2-0 against Australia’s Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy to secure the bronze medal for Switzerland.
