A man killed in his Bellfield home has been identified as a warm and generous young pharmacist.

Kum Chuan Leong, known as “KC”, was found dead in his Davidson Street townhouse in Melbourne’s north-east shortly before 11.30am on Wednesday.

Police said a 54-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested in a nearby park and has been charged with murder. He was expected to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

On his Facebook page, 29-year-old Leong described himself as a “simple guy with ambitions”.

He finished a Master of Clinical Pharmacy at Monash University and bought his home earlier this year. He has worked as a resident pharmacist at Eastern Health since 2021.

Chief executive of Eastern Health David Plunkett said Leong was “being remembered as a warm and generous member of the pharmacy team”.

“It is with great sadness that Eastern Health acknowledge the shocking death of our friend and colleague Kum Chuan ‘KC’ Leong,” Plunkett said.

“KC was recognised as a talented leader and was also a mentor for many of our emerging pharmacists. He will be remembered for his passion, kindness and dedication to his team and the broader community.

“KC was just 29 years old, and this tragedy will be felt by many. Given the sensitive nature of this matter, we ask you to respect the privacy of his family, friends and colleagues at this time.”

Neighbour Susan Cotchin told Nine News she heard screams the night before Leong’s body was found and saw a police car on the street on Wednesday morning.

“So I thought it had been dealt with, but then this morning, we heard more sobbing,” she said on Wednesday.

Victoria Police confirmed it had responded to a report of people arguing on Davidson Street about 11.30pm on Tuesday – about 12 hours before Leong’s body was discovered.

“Officers door-knocked nearby residences and monitored the area, but no further complaints were received,” a spokeswoman said.
