NETS PRODUCE BIG UPSET AMID REGRETABLE SIMMONS MOMENT
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
And unfortunately for Ben Simmons, his reluctance to take the ball to the rim remains a glaring issue as evidenced in one play in Brooklyn’s latest game on Monday.
The Nets upset Eastern Conference contenders Milwaukee 115-102 to claim their first win of the year, with Cam Thomas and Denis Schroder combining for 61 points.
Simmons, meanwhile, had six assists, six rebounds and a steal but his single bucket came on a tip-in, with the Australian otherwise only attempting three field goals in the entire game.
There was one moment where Simmons had a chance to add to his points tally late in the fourth quarter when he picked Damian Lillard’s pocket to force a turnover.

Simmons quickly got possession and had a relatively open lane to the rim, with Brook Lopez the only Bucks defender nearby.
But instead of at least taking Lopez on to try draw a foul, Simmons passed it to Cam Johnson who immediately gave it back to the Australian, who wasn’t expecting it.
“He has to go to the basket on that,” Sarah Kustok said in commentary.
Ryan Ruocco, meanwhile, added that Simmons’ reluctance to go to the rim was “staggering to watch”.
It was particularly frustrating given Simmons had looked more aggressive and engaged in general to open the season, although that had been a double-edged sword given it had the Australian in foul trouble early in games.
That remained the case on Monday as Simmons picked up two quick fouls in the first five minutes against the Bucks.
Simmons scored his first points of the game when he tipped in a missed shot from Thomas, with the Bucks up 12-11 at that point.
However, turnovers started to prove a serious issue from Milwaukee from that point, with the Bucks totalling seven turnovers in the first quarter alone to fall behind 27-25.
Simmons was effective on the defensive end, playing with plenty of on-ball pressure to disrupt passing lanes and then later assisted on a wide-open Jalen Wilson 3-pointer with a nice outlet pass.
The Nets took a 48-45 lead into halftime despite shooting 34.6 per cent from the field, with Denis Schroder (15 points) Brooklyn’s most consistent source of buckets in the first half.
If anything, it was Brooklyn’s defensive pressure that was proving the difference early in Monday’s game, because Milwaukee was unable to get much going either, shooting 39.5 per cent from the field and making just four of 17 3-point attempts.
That remained the case for the remainder of the game, while Thomas started to catch fire in the second half for the Nets, scoring 25 points to seal Jordi Fernandez’s first win as coach.
DANIELS’ HAWKS SUFFER FIRST LOSS AS SGA, THUNDER CONTINUE TO ROLL
Dyson Daniels’ Atlanta Hawks suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the undefeated Oklahoma City Thunder 128-104.
Daniels did a good job guarding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for most of the State Farm Arena game before the Thunder superstar took over in the fourth quarter.
After what’d been a highly competitive contest, Gilgeous-Alexander scored 14 of his game-high 35 points in the final term as the Thunder outscored Atlanta 39-18 to cruise to a blowout victory.
Gilgeous-Alexander shot 11-of-24 from the field overall and 10-of-11 from the free throw line with three triples, 11 rebounds, nine assists, three steals and three blocks.
Daniel, after scoring a career-high 18 points against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, couldn't gets things going on the offensive end.
The Aussie shot 3-of-11 from the field for his seven points, but added eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. His 34 minutes were the second most of any Hawk after Trae Young’s 37 minutes.
The loss saw the Hawks fall to 2-1 ahead of back-to-back games against Washington on Tuesday and Thursday, while OKC, who was playing in its home opener, improved to 3-0.
Elsewhere for the Thunder, Chet Holmgren continued his superb start to the season with 25 points, three threes, nine rebounds and six blocks and Jalen Williams added 20 points and nine rebounds.
Young’s 24 points and eight assists led the Hawks, but the star guard also had 10 turnovers.
