Why Billie Eilish Skipped the 2024 Met Gala

After dressing in black lace at last year’s Met Gala, Billie Eilish sat out this year’s event. The singer is busy gearing up for the release of her next album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which drops on May 17. Earlier today, she enthusiastically announced album listening parties in New York and Los Angeles. In September, she’ll be hitting the road on tour as well.

While the singer didn’t get to wear a “Garden of Time”-themed look tonight, Eilish made her Met Gala debut in 2021 and served as a co-chair that year for its “In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion” theme. She wore a nude tulle Oscar de la Renta gown, with her hair styled in a platinum, Marilyn Monroe-like bob.

In 2022, she wore a custom tan corset dress by Gucci for the “Gilded Glamour” theme. Her hair was black and pinned up.

Last year, Eilish wore another corset dress (this time by Simone Rocha), for the night’s “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty” theme.

Eilish reflected on her first Met Gala experience during a 2021 interview with Howard Stern. She said, “It’s nuts. It’s famous people famous people-ing. That’s what it is.”

“You know what, the main thing that night made me think or feel was how famous people are just literally nobodies,” she added. “Just randos, and it’s so weird. I was like, ‘Wow, all these people are just somebody that’s in class with you.’ You think this person’s kinda annoying, you really like this person, you get along with this person, and everybody’s just, like, embarrassed and insecure about what they’re doing and saying.”

In the interview with Stern, she described the Met Gala as, “amazing, though. It was just beautiful in there.”
