A 10-year-old girl has been fatally stabbed west of Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to a home at Boolaroo just before 4pm on Monday.

Police say the girl suffered multiple stab wounds.

She was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene.

A 17-year-old girl at the home has been arrested and taken to Belmont Police Station, where she is assisting police.

Police believe the girls are known to each other.

A crime scene has been established at the home.

Local MP mourns girl's death

Boolaroo is in the New South Wales state electorate of Lake Macquarie.

The local independent MP Greg Piper said he was shocked by the stabbing.

"All I know is that it is a 10-year-old girl who has been stabbed and has not survived and she has now passed away," he said.

"The loss of a 10-year-old under any circumstances is tragic but this is particularly awful and my thoughts go out to the local community and her family and friends."

Mr Piper's voice shook as he reflected on the ramifications for the community.

"This is going to be widely felt. I believe and the community will obviously be hearing more about it as time goes on," he said.

"I have spoken to the Minister of Police Yasmin Catley and she is also obviously very upset about this.

"When you are 10 years old you are by definition an innocent person and you have a long life hopefully ahead of you to have this taken away under any circumstances is terrible, it is just tragic."
