The Bridge to Brisbane race is expected to dominate the CBD on Sunday, with 30,000 runners and walkers slated to take part in the five-kilometre and 10-kilometre races, and road closures in place around the city from early morning.

The first closures will be in effect from 2am Sunday and the last will be lifted at 4pm.

Organisers have arranged detour routes for motorists, lifting tolls on the Clem 7 southbound and Airport Link M7 from 5am to 9.30am.

The five-kilometre and 10-kilometre races will start from Hamilton and the Gateway Bridge’s southern end in Murarrie, respectively, ending at the Brisbane Showgrounds where a ‘Finish Village’ including food and entertainment will be erected.

A former Broncos trainer has called for the struggling club to sack its coach, and undergo a cultural overhaul.

Mark “Chopper” Burgess worked under Wayne Bennett at the Broncos between 1998 and 2004, when the Brisbane team won two premierships.

He told 4BC on Friday coach Kevin Walters had surrounded himself with “yes men” and overseen a failure of leadership.

“There were up to 30 trainers doing something that justified their existence and position,” Burgess said of a recent stint at the club.

“I couldn’t believe the amount of staff and, secondly, [they had this] palatial gymnasium that looked more like a hairdressing salon.”

He endorsed NSW coach Michael Maguire to take over the top job.

The state government has called for a review into the domestic and family violence offence of non-fatal strangulation, with recommendations to be released in late 2025.

The government will next week move amendments to clarify the offence – extending parameters to include the restriction of blood flow as well as air, via compression to a person’s neck – and has requested a holistic review by September next year.

Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath said after eight years of operation, the law was due for the review to ensure it was operating as intended.

Key areas for investigation included ensuring sentencing matched the severity of the offences, and whether to remove or amend the requirement that the choking, strangulation or suffocation be “without the other person’s consent”.

The maximum penalty for a non-fatal strangulation offence is seven years’ imprisonment, but 98.7 per cent of those sentenced received a custodial sentence.

“Non-fatal strangulation in a domestic and family violence relationship is a huge red flag because it indicates a person is at much higher risk of more serious violence or homicide at the hands of a current or former intimate partner,” D’Ath said.

We’re still unclear on if and how the Queensland government may give a financial lifeline to embattled casino operator Star, but one senior member has sought to downplay its role in ensuring a report into one of the company’s Queen’s Wharf partners remains secret.

Quizzed about the contents of the unreleased probity report into Hong Kong-based Chow Tai Fook Enterprises by journalists in Brisbane on Friday, Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick said “the government must comply with the law”.

“There’s an injunction [from the Supreme Court] that says the report is not to be released publicly,” Dick said.

“That is not an application made by the Queensland government, that is not a civil case that is brought by the Queensland government. The Queensland government was not a party to those proceedings.”

What Dick did not say was that the government did, however, tip-off CTFE that this masthead had seen a leaked copy of the report – after which the firm launched the court action to block its publication and the government agreed to act as a witness for CTFE.

Treasury is in discussions with Star about potential tax deferral amid last-ditch efforts to stay solvent. Dick said while the first concern was with workers and supplies, “we will take a hard line with Star and we will ensure that they pay their taxes.”

The brazen theft of a golf buggy in Redland Bay is under police investigation, with a young woman wanted by police.

CCTV shows a woman with a dog driving off in the buggy towards Anita Street.

Police say she may be able to “assist with their investigation.”

She had long blonde hair and was wearing a black top, white skirt, black sunglasses and black shoes.

The woman also appears to have tattoos on her upper left thigh and right calf.

Police are urging the public to help find information on a 14-year-old girl missing from Caboolture since August, believed to have travelled to the Ipswich and Redbank Plains area.

The girl was last seen at her residence two weeks ago on August 23 at 10pm.

She was described as Caucasian in appearance and wearing denim shorts, a black t-shirt, and knee-high Converse boots.

Police said they had serious concerns for the girl’s welfare due to her young age.

They appealed to the public for information, saying anyone who may have seen the girl should immediately contact police.
