The MFS issued a warning advising nearby residents to remain indoors with their windows and doors closed.

The hotel – which was first opened in about 1846 – is currently under renovation with plans to build a 10-storey apartment building submitted to the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) last month.

The Adelaide establishment was well-known for its smorgasbord before its closure in 2022.

SA Police ask anyone who noticed any suspicious activity or has any information about the fire to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
