Live updates: Panthers vs Titans

Just nowSat 7 Sep 2024 at 10:09am

29' Jojo Fifita SMASHES the Panthers!

The Panthers are on the attack, but Jojo Fifita is on a one-man mission to change the momentum.

He absolutely folds Brad Schneider in half to abruptly stop an attacking move down the left.

Then, with Paul Alamoti threatening, he smashes into him too.

It's like watching that one big kid who shaves playing against the under 13s at the moment.

Incredible stuff from Fifita.

26' Error from the Panthers!

The Titans will keep the attack going after Jojo Fifita punched the ball free in a tackle.

Jayden Campbell starts to pull some strings and puts in a little kick to himself that Lindsay Smith just about diffuses and Mitch Kenny finishes.

The goal line drop out is high and short from Jarome Luai - but the Panthers recover. They needed that.

22' Titans on the charge

Jojo Fifita with a little break down the right!

That's really nice from the Titans, two passes inside and the Titans are really threatening, but Scott Sorensen was on hand to make the tackle.

One more pass inside and that was a Titans try.

20' Dylan Edwards drops it cold!

Wow, you don't see that often.

Dylan Edwards was on the right edge of the Panthers ruck, as he so often is, and just drops it cold as the Titans defence looked to be stretched.

The Titans are here to play and the Panthers won't want to butcher too many chances I wouldn't have thought.

17' Jayden Campbell brilliance!

Oh my goodness that is so, so good from Jayden Campbell.

With two brilliant, silky steps, he takes out three Panthers defenders and ghosts through the line to score.

That is absolutely remarkable.

If you'd told me that was a replay of Preston Campbell then I may have believed you.

But absolutely wonderful skill.

His kick is good and the Gold Coast lead Penrith 6-4.

7' Brian To'o crosses in the corner!
(Getty Images)

An error from Brian Kelly, who rushed out to try and cut off Dylan Edwards.

But the Panthers fullback shrugged off the Titans centre and passed out to To'o, who scored in the corner.

No headgear for To'o - almost didn't recognise him.

The Panthers had the pressure on after Alofiana Khan-Pereira coughed up possession trying to take the ball out from his own end.

The kick from Paul Alamoti is off target, it remains 4-0.

Oh this is nice.

A real guard of honour for James Fisher Harris - who departs for the Warriors next season.

He is wearing a Kahu huruhuru, a Māori feather cloak, in a real mark of honour to the forward.

He bows out having played 200 games for the Panthers.

Panthers vs Titans team news

Panthers Park is the name of the venue, given its the last time this venue will be used in the regular season in its current form.

(NRL.com)

Penrith are 1-17 with no late changes.

The Gold Coast though, have made a change,

Arama Hau will start on debut with Klese Haas reverting to the bench.

Sad to note that Keano Kini is out with a cork for the second-straight week - he's a fun player to watch.

Jayden Campbell moves to fullback and Tanah Boyd to the halves.

There's no David Fifita either - he has surgery on an ankle to prepare for.

Jacob Alick returns for his first game since Round 18.

Bulldogs 'gotta be better'
(ABC Sport)

Reed Mahoney didn't pull any punches in his assessment of the performance when talking to ABC Sport.

"Can't just keep turning the ball over, defend five sets, then turn it over and play two, it catches up to you," he says.

"We just didn't complete and didn't earn anything tonight.

"We've gotta be better."

Starting with next week's probable match against the Sea Eagles in an elimination final.

Listen here.

The best Cowboys have played all year?
(ABC Sport)

That's what Val Holmes just told ABC Sport.

"I thought our training this week was really good ... and that set the standard against these boys," he says.

"I reckon this is probably our best performance all year, over 80 minutes."

Hard not to agree with him, in truth.

Tom Dearden, meanwhile, said the club always believed what they were capable of.

(ABC Sport)

"We had it in front of us to finish fifth, so it was good that we could put in a really good performance off the back of our defence, and secure a home semifinal," he says.

Cowboys crush the Bulldogs in Sydney to set up home elimination final
(Getty Images)

What a performance from the Cowboys, who have thrashed the Bulldogs.

The Cowboys scored seven tries to one, Kyle Feldt scoring a double to bring up his 150th NRL try, with Murray Taulagi also scoring twice as Heilum Luki, Scott Drinkwater and Val Holmes also crossing.

Holmes was perfect from the kicking tee too, kicking seven conversions and a penalty goal as the Cowboys dominated from start to finish.

The Bulldogs, heading into their first finals campaign in eight seasons, have now shipped 88 points in their last two games and need an urgent reset.

Only a 61st minute try to Toby Sexton troubled the score board in front of a big home crowd.

That was a stunner.

74' The Cowboys score!

Murray Taulagi with a second try in the last five minutes.

He finishes off a really nice move down the left side to move into the 40's.

Wowza, this is getting worse and worse for the Bulldogs, with Val Holmes nailing yet another kick - 44-6 the score is.

Jacob Kiraz is staying out there for now after getting treatment on that shoulder. Perhaps they think it's just a stinger.

Oh no, this isn't good from Jacob Kiraz, who is clutching at his shoulder.

This could be bad news for the Bulldogs.

73' Bulldogs changes come

Stephen Crichton and Viliame Kikau both come off the field.

The Bulldogs are resetting ahead of next week.

70' INTERCEPT FOR TAULAGI!
(Getty Images)

Taulai goes 75 metres up field!

Connor Tracey throws a pass right into his arms as the Bulldogs try to shift the ball to the right side.

Murray Taulagi took off and was never going to be caught.

Incredible.

Val Holmes kicks his 24th-straight goal to make it 38-6.

This is a shellacking of the highest order. The Bulldogs are all at sea.

1h agoSat 7 Sep 2024 at 9:03am

66' Jonathan Sua hammered back behind the try line!

Oh boy, another rough moment for the youngster, who is hammered by the Cowboys from about five metres out to being slammed back about five metres behind the try line.

Toby Sexton will kick a goal line drop out - and he kicks it out on the full.

Try again, Toby, who gets it right this time.

And then Reuben Cotter makes an error to force a Bulldogs scrum.

Looking forward to a recurrence of recurring BANGS for Nth QLD...

62' The Bulldogs on the board!

A short kick off gives the Bulldogs a chance.

A fluffed kick clearance by the Cowboys adds more certainty to the chance.

And Toby Sexton was on hand to dot down after the ball bounced up into his hands.

The kick from Stephen Crichton is good and it's 32-6.
