Most notably, the semifinals are played across two legs with each team getting one home and one road matchup. The team winning the aggregate score will advance to the final at Wembley on March 16.
There will be extra time in the EFL Cup semifinals and final, meaning if the aggregate scoreline is level at the end of the second leg, an additional 30 minutes will be played before a potential penalty shootout is required. Previous rounds of the EFL Cup saw matches level after 90 minutes progress straight to penalties.
Additionally, there will be VAR for the semifinals and final. It has not been in place to this point in the competition but will be used from this point forward, because all remaining participants have the capabilities at their home grounds. Last year, VAR was not used in the semifinals as participants Middlesborough did not have the system at their home stadium.
