Caroline told Today it has been an incredible year both personally and for the alliance between Australia and the US since touching down in Australia last July.

"I've had a chance to see this incredible country, I have been to Uluru and Western Australia, I have been up to Darwin and seen the crocodiles - it's amazing," she said.

"I feel so fortunate to be able to meet people everywhere I go and learn from them, what is on their minds and how they feel about the United States as well and talk to them about what we are doing here together in this region."

The 65-year-old recently had to opportunity to retrace her late father's footsteps and recreate his World War II Pacific Islands swim in the Solomon Islands.

She said it is an incredibly exciting time in the Pacific right now and reinforced how fortunate she is to be working with Australia.

"It is great to retrace his steps in a different time," she said.

"The fact that I am an ambassador in Australia and I got to go to the Solomon Islands and meet the families of the Solomon Scouts who rescued him and the Australian Coast Guard rescue, it is incredibly meaningful and my son was with me too."

And for all the hard work Caroline is putting into her role as US Ambassador to Australia through the AUKUS deal, climate change and Japan and China relations, she still has time for fun with Bunnings sausage sizzles, surfing and barracking for the Matildas now the US team is out of the World Cup.

"They are doing so great, I have my hat and my scarf, I'm all ready," she said.
