The WSL and NWSL have looked to keep an open dialogue in order to share learnings and achieve mutual growth.

Speaking to SportsPro in March, NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said she talks regularly with Nikki Doucet, the newly appointed chief executive of NewCo that was formed to govern the WSL and second-tier Women’s Championship from next season.

“[Nikki and I have] really had a very collaborative, open dialogue recognising that [the WSL is] at this pivotal moment,” said Berman. “The next 12 to 18 months are going to be really important for their future.

“If we want to build the value of this sport, knowing that there’s going to be a [women’s] Club World Cup, the more interest there is globally, the better it is for all of us.”

Doucet also revealed a willingness to share information with the NWSL, believing women’s soccer is at a stage where both properties can grow together.

“At this point, the whole tide should rise,” said Doucet, who was speaking at SportsPro Live at the end of April. “We all are working together to help each other. We have a good relationship with the NWSL at the moment. I think they’re doing great. Equally, I think our league is very well positioned in this market.

“The markets are different, so how we come to life here is slightly different than in the US.”

In addition, with departing Chelsea boss Emma Hayes now set to manage the US women’s national team, it is an ideal time for the Blues and Arsenal to drum up interest in women’s English soccer from fans in the States.
