Chelsea vs Arsenal

Arsenal preserved their unbeaten start to the Premier League season on Saturday, fighting back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel Arteta secured his first Premier League win over Pep Guardiola ahead of the international break as Gabriel Martinelli's late winner sealed a 1-0 victory over defending champions Manchester City. They came into this game with real momentum, although the pressure was on to replicate that performance against City given the champions, and Liverpool, had both won earlier.

The Gunners certainly didn't look like they were going to respond to those victories for their title rivals. Cole Palmer's penalty, awarded for a handball against William Saliba after a VAR review, gave Chelsea a 15th-minute lead that was just reward for a strong start to the game.

Shortly after halftime, Mykhailo Mudryk — previously linked with Arsenal before joining Chelsea — lobbed goalkeeper David Raya with what looked like an attempted cross from the left. Arsenal had by this point not managed a shot on target, and they looked second best.

But the game changed in the space of seven second-half minutes. Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez played a poor pass that allowed Declan Rice to send a first-time shot into the unguarded net from outside the box, giving his side some hope. Then, with six minutes of normal time remaining, substitute Leandro Trossard turned in a cross from Bukayo Saka, right in front of the delirious Arsenal fans.

It was a remarkable ending to the game and it ensured a point that, for much of the match, Arsenal would not have thought possible. Yet a draw is not a result that either manager will celebrate too wildly.

Chelsea vs Arsenal final score   Fulltime Goalscorers CHE 2  Palmer (15'), Mudryk (48') ARS 2 Rice (77'), Trossard (84')

Chelsea lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Sanchez — Gusto, Thiago Silva, Colwill, Cucurella — Gallagher, Caicedo, Fernandez — Palmer (James, 84'), Sterling (Madueke, 84'), Mudryk (Jackson, 66')

Arsenal lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko (Tomiyasu 46') — Rice, Jorginho (Smith Rowe, 68'), Odegaard (Havertz, 78') — Saka, Jesus (Nketiah, 68'), Martinelli (Trossard, 78')

David Raya gives Mikel Arteta food for thought

Much has been made of Mikel Arteta's decision to sign David Raya from Brentford and then install him as first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners' undisputed No. 1 last season, Ramsdale admitted during the international break that he may have to consider his future if he is unable to get back his place before the January transfer window.

Based on today's events, his chance to reclaim that spot may not be far away.

This was, to say the least, a mixed bag for Raya. He did not look overly comfortable when put under pressure and, had he not recovered well to make a save at Palmer's feet, his dreadful misplaced pass could well have put his side 3-0 down. That was after his questionable positioning for Mudryk's mishit cross that ended up being Chelsea's second goal.

Yet Raya did also make an important save at the feet of Nicolas Jackson, along with atoning for that error against Palmer. These were moments that gave Arsenal the platform for that unlikely comeback.

The debate over which keeper should be Arteta's first choice is not likely to go away.

— NBC Sports Soccer (@NBCSportsSoccer) October 21, 2023 A missed chance for Chelsea but things are looking up

Chelsea's run of one win in their opening six league games of the season led to questions over manager Mauricio Pochettino, but the signs are certainly looking better as we head towards November.

Impressive wins over Fulham and Burnley before the international break improved the mood at the Bridge, but the opening hour of their performance today was their best of the season by a distance. The fact Arsenal did not have a shot on target in the first half says a lot.

The Blues will be desperately unhappy to have thrown away a win in this fashion, not least given Rice's goal came directly from a mistake from keeper Robert Sanchez, but the manner of the overall performance will have pleased Pochettino.

Chelsea must play Tottenham, Man City, Newcastle United, Brighton and Manchester United before mid-December, but if they replicate the best of today's display, they will be a challenge for every one of those sides.

The Sporting News followed the Chelsea vs. Arsenal match live, providing score updates, commentary, and highlights as they happened.

Chelsea vs Arsenal highlights and commentary Fulltime: Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal

Chelsea have a free-kick close to halfway and start to build an attack, but there's no time to do so as the referee brings things to a close. What an ending to this game! Chelsea led comfortably but Arsenal, somehow, have clawed back a result. Enthralling stuff at Stamford Bridge.

90 + 5 mins: Jackson works some space as he drives into the box, but his low shot is saved by Raya at full stretch.

90 + 4 mins: Arsenal's attack breaks down rather meekly, but Chelsea give the ball straight back to Saka. Mind you, his shot from 20 yards is a simple save for Sanchez. It's all got a bit scrappy since Arsenal equalised.

90th min: We'll have a minimum of seven additional minutes. Will we see a winner?

86th min: Nketiah! Arsenal's striker chases a lost cause and toe-pokes the ball towards goal, where it has Sanchez worried before it bobbles wide.

84th min: GOAL! Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal

What is happening here?! Six minutes after coming on as a substitute, Leandro Trossard stretches to meet Bukayo Saka's cross from the right and pokes the ball into the bottom corner! Sanchez was on his line and he was too close to Trossard to do anything about that. We're level!

Now it's Sanchez's turn to make the error! An errant pass allows Rice to strike the ball into an unguarded net from nearly 30 yards out. Game on at Stamford Bridge!

72nd min: Chelsea have looked pretty comfortable and Arsenal have struggled to create meaningful chances. Can they find a way back into this?

68th min: Saka is released by a good Jorginho throughball but Thiago Silva slides in expertly to cut out the winger's dangerous low cross.

66th min: Raya produces a fine piece of goalkeeping this time, standing up well before timing his dive just right to take the ball off the feet of Nicolas Jackson. The Chelsea sub was through on goal but hesitated against the Arsenal man.

58th min: RAYA! He passes straight to Palmer inside his own area but, to his credit, the Arsenal keeper scrambles across to block the Chelsea man's shot behind. That could so easily have been game over!

52nd min: Rice wins the ball from Caicedo and feeds Martinelli, who works space on his right foot but see his shot deflect wide. Sanchez rather flaps at the resulting corner, but he gets away with it.

48th min: GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal

Chelsea win back the ball and spring forward on the counter-attack. Mudryk gets the ball in space on the let and tries to cross to Sterling at the far post, and the ball loops over the stranded Raya and in! It didn't look like he meant it, but it doesn't look like he cares!

We're underway! One change for Arsenal as Tomiyasu replaces Zinchenko.

HALF-TIME: Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

45th+1 min: Sterling races through into the box and takes a tumble while going between Zinchenko and Martinelli but he doesn't appeal too much.

45th min: Thiago Silva gets a yellow card.

43rd min: Chelsea counter on the break through Sterling, who plays the ball inside to Gusto supporting him. but his first-time effort from the edge of the box sails over the bar.

42nd min: Arteta is still pretty agitated in the dugout. It's been a frustrating half for Arsenal so far with very little creativity going forward.

37th min: Gallagher is causing problems for Arsenal and he finds himself unmarked with a free chance after Saliba and Gabriel both go for the same ball but he can't get a decent shot off from a tight angle and luckily for him he was offside anyway.

34th min: Chelsea are dominating the midfield so far and that's where Arsenal are finding it hard to break them down. A bit of frustration from Saka as he arrives late on Cucurella.

30th min: A decent chance for Palmer to get his second! He makes a neat run across the box and gets a shot away from the left but it's dragged just wide of Raya's far post.

27th min: Gallagher goes down after taking a clearance from Martinelli in the stomach but he's soon back up. The brief pause gives the players a chance to get a drink and Arteta is barking orders at his players.

24th min: Arsenal are just starting to find some space down the right wing and a neat ball into Jesus' feet looks inviting but Thiago Silva does brilliantly to block his countryman's shot on the turn.

19th min: How will Arsenal respond to that then? They've not exactly upped the ante just yet but Rice does drive forward down the left and crosses with the outside of his right boot which goes wide of the far post.

15th min: GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal

Palmer makes no mistake from the spot as he coolly slots it to the bottom left corner as Raya dives the other way.

12th min: Big appeals for a penalty from Chelsea as Mudryk's headed effort sees the ball strike Saliba's hand. Referee Chris Kavanagh is summoned to the VAR monitor and after a lengthy check he awards the penalty! Saliba's arm is deemed to be in an unnatural position.

11th min: A few minutes later it's 1-1 on the bookings! Mudryk's quick feet in midfield is too much for Zinchenko who swipes at him too late and it's a yellow card for the Ukrainian.

7th min: Ouch! As Gabriel Jesus wriggles free of Cole Palmer the Chelsea striker makes a lunge at his opponent's heel which looks a painful one. The striker gets an early booking.

4th min: Arsenal, who have won on their last three visits to Stamford Bridge, look a little nervy to start with Chelsea bringing the ball into their final third. Gabriel and Saliba are just starting to get a foot on the ball though and calm the rest of the team.
