AFL Finals 2024: Chris Fagan full of praise for Brisbane Lions ...
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan says Will Ashcroft’s semifinal-turning heroics were all self-inspired as the 20-year-old helped yank his team to one of the great finals comebacks against GWS.
He also revealed while he couldn’t watch spearhead Joe Daniher take two match-winning set shots in the clutch final-quarter moments; he was not surprised the former Bomber slotted them.
Fagan was in the thick of the celebrations after his side turned a 44-point deficit in the third term into a remarkable five-point triumph on enemy soil in Sydney to send the Giants tumbling from the finals race in straight sets.
Ashcroft was also at the centre of celebrations after producing 27 disposals, nine clearances, five tackles and 466 metres gained, the majority of which came as the Lions produced two five-goal runs in the third and final quarters.
“We had to make a few changes because we weren’t looking good but (Ashcroft) played an amazing game,” Fagan told Channel 7 in the rooms after the Lions had belted out the team song.
“He’s such a good player that bloke but I reckon he sensed the moment and just lifted so well done to him.
“It’s the best win I’ve ever been involved in.”
Daniher, who’s goal-kicking woes have been central to the Lions woes at times in 2024, was also pivotal to the comeback, booting the last two goals of the match, including one from a near-impossible angle in the pocket.
“Funnily enough, I reckon Joey really likes pressure, so I wasn’t surprised when he kicked it,” Fagan revealed.
“I didn’t look, but he stood up, and that’s what we look for in those guys in the big moment, and he got it done for us.”
Fagan couldn’t hide his delight or pride at his team’s amazing escape.
“I’m massively proud becuase this is a tough task tonight with the Giants being a great team all year,” he said.
“Playing them on their home ground, they’re an experienced and talented side, so to find a way is just amazing.
“I just appealed to the boys to keep having a crack, and we were able to get some goals late in that third quarter, and it got us back in it.
“It’s one of those days in footy you will never forget.”
