VR-based classroom learning for speech therapy training

Start Beyond and the University of Newcastle have entered a partnership that will see VR-based learning used for speech therapy training.

As part of the partnership, Start Beyond has developed a VR speech therapy training component for the Speech Pathology degree at the University of Newcastle to help students gain a realistic understanding of performing an oral muscular assessment on young patients.

Following a successful pilot program, Start Beyond won a $100,000 grant from the NSW Government to broaden the course program and develop brand new modules for the Speech Pathology discipline.

Previously accessible only via VR headsets, the content will now also be accessible globally on app stores, VR quest stories and the Oncio platform for mobile and desktop use to ensure fully flexible learning. The commercialisation of the learning modules also allows similar facilities around the world to build the classroom of the future, today.

“Since partnering with Start Beyond we have witnessed an overwhelming response to the Speech Pathology VR experiences and seen firsthand the positive impact this format of learning is having on our students’ education,” said Joanne Walters, Lecturer Speech Pathology at the University of Newcastle.
