Clayton Oliver will meet with Geelong heavyweights on Tuesday, including chief executive Steve Hocking, as the Cats ramp up their effort to lure the star midfielder out of Melbourne.

The meeting with Hocking and football boss Andrew Mackie comes after this masthead revealed rival clubs believed the 27-year-old was again an attainable trade target.

Melbourne officials said on Tuesday they were unaware the meeting was taking place, but would not comment publicly.

Geelong officials were contacted for comment on Tuesday. Oliver’s management did not want to comment.

Two sources close to Oliver, who wanted to remain anonymous to speak freely, confirmed the meeting.

Melbourne, whom a source said had indicated to people in the industry they were not interested in trading the midfielder, released a statement late on Monday following this masthead’s report.

“Clayton is an important player for our club and remains a contracted, required member of the team. We look forward to seeing Clayton in the red and blue next year and beyond,” football boss Alan Richardson said.

Oliver has six years remaining on his contract at Melbourne, where his average annual wage exceeds $1 million.
