Coldplay: English band to play one-off gig in Perth later this year
Perth has scored a major musical coup with confirmation Coldplay will play a one-off gig in Australia at the Optus Stadium later this year.
The West Australian revealed in April the McGowan Government was in talks to lure the English band to WA as part of their blockbusting Music of the Spheres global tour.
The tour began in Costa Rica in March last year, with speculation the multi-Grammy winners could perform in WA in mid to late November.
The concert looms as a massive tourism coup for WA, with interstate and international fans set to come to Perth and stay in the city for several nights. Special guests and general public tickets sales for the WA tour are expected to be announced at a later date.
The Optus Stadium concert appears to be inspired by the one-night-only Billy Joel concert at Melbourne’s MCG in December last year.
It will be the first time the Chris Martin-led band has performed in Perth since 2009 when they played at the Burswood Dome. In 2012 and 2016 they toured the Eastern States but gave WA the cold shoulder.
Coldplay has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, had 24 singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold out arenas all over the world since they burst on to the music scene with the smash hit Yellow in 2000.
Known for their spectacular live shows, the band broke records at the end of last year when they played to more than 600,000 fans in a sold-out 10 night run at Buenos Aires’ River Plate stadium.
Perth has played host to an unprecedented wave of international music heavyweights in the past few months, including Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Post Malone and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
