Coldplay's Perth concert details revealed but not cost to taxpayers

9 May 2023

Details of Coldplay’s one-off concert in Perth — including how to get tickets — have been revealed despite Tourism Minister Roger Cook refusing to say how much it will cost taxpayers to bring them to WA.

The concert date has now been confirmed as Saturday, November 18, with about 70,000 tickets for the Optus Stadium gig set to go on sale Monday.

The superstar band will be supported by Amy Shark and Thelma Plum.

In a dedicated advertising video for Perth, Chris Martin apologised for the long wait for Australian fans to watch them at home.

“We’re so excited to announce that we’ll be coming through Perth for one concert at Optus Stadium on November 18,” Martin said.

“We haven’t been to Australia for too long and we’re so excited to come down.”

The West Australian revealed in April that the McGowan Government was in talks to lure the English band to WA as part of their blockbusting Music of the Spheres global tour.

Tourism Minister Roger Cook said he could not disclose the cost to taxpayers to attract Coldplay to Perth but said he hoped the concert would bring international tourism dollars into WA.

The State Government will launch an advertising campaign in nearby Asian markets, including Singapore and New Zealand.

“This is a major coup for WA as it’s a national exclusive. For one night only Coldplay will be performing here at Optus Stadium,” Mr Cook said.

“We know that Coldplay is one of the best live music bands in the world at the moment. So, I think people can expect the very best that they have to offer.

The announcement comes after The Sunday Times revealed the State Government would boost major event funding by $15 million in Thursday’s State Budget, including $10 million to attract sporting and cultural events.

The boost comes as World Wrestling Entertainment officials came from the US to begin discussions with Tourism WA about bringing one of the world’s greatest spectacles, WrestleMania, to Perth.

The British band has performed in Perth since 2009 when they played at the Burswood Dome. In 2012 and 2016 they toured the Eastern States but gave WA the cold shoulder.

Coldplay has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, had 24 singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold out arenas all over the world since they burst onto the music scene with the smash hit Yellow in 2000.

Mr Cook has not been to a concert himself but said he looked forward to watching them onstage in Perth.

Arts and Culture Minister David Templeman expressed his excitement to Perth reporters when revealing the concert date that he broke out in song — choosing the band’s famous “Yellow”.

Presale begins at 10am on Monday and will run through until Tuesday 9am.

People can sign up for the presale here.

General public tickets go on sale on Tuesday at 10am via livenation.com.au.
