Tourism plays an important role in Cyprus’s economy. According to the latest data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the country had 3.8 million arrivals in 2023, a 20,1 per cent increase compared to 2022.

According to the WTTC, tourism contributed 12.8 per cent of Cyprus’s GDP in 2023, an increase from 12.2 per cent in 2022. Therefore, promoting Cyprus as a tourist destination is a key objective of the embassy in Jakarta.

Nikos Panayiotou, ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Indonesia and ASEAN and high commissioner to Singapore, told TTG Asia: “Tourism is an important sector of our economy. We are a country of about a million people and we receive about four million tourists a year, so you understand that this is important to us.”

He noted that the Asian market is huge, and that more middle-class travellers were interested to discover new destinations. Moreover, visitors who gain a first-hand experience on the country could lead to educational or business opportunities.

While small in size compared to its neighbours, Cyprus offers diverse attractions such as sunny beaches, historical sites, cultural diversity due to European and Middle East influences, food and wine – all of which are attractive to the South-east Asian communities, according to Panayiotou.

History enthusiasts can delve into Cyprus’s rich past, exploring Neolithic settlements dating back over 11,000 years, as well as Greco-Roman ruins like the Κourion Ancient Amphitheater, and medieval fortifications such as Kolossi Castle.

To reach Cyprus, travellers can fly from Indonesia via the Gulf region with Emirates and Qatar Airways. Both airlines offer flights from Jakarta and Bali to their hubs in Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively. Visitors can then take a connecting flight to Cyprus’ Larnakaa International Airport.

With the diplomatic mission now open in Jakarta, it is also easier for Indonesian and Philippine travellers to obtain visas for their Cyprus visit. Single-entry visas are valid for up to 90 days, and those holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa can visit Cyprus without needing an additional visa. Singaporeans can also enter Cyprus visa-free.

To effectively reach South-east Asian markets, Panayiotou said the embassy will leverage social media and strengthen its communication with industry players. By gaining a deeper understanding of these markets, the embassy can tailor its approach to attract potential visitors.
