Dan Houston

Dan Houston has been granted his wish to join Collingwood after the Magpies agreed on a three-team deal with Port Adelaide and the Gold Coast Suns.

The deal saw Joe Richards, Rory Atkins and Jack Lukosius head to Port Adelaide, while the Suns landed John Noble.

Earlier, West Coast fans were stunned as the club traded backwards in the draft in a three-team deal involving Carlton and Richmond, which saw Liam Baker and Matt Owies join the Eagles.

Two further deals were completed on day seven, as St Kilda executed a pick swap with the Brisbane Lions, before the Lions traded youngster Harry Sharp to Melbourne.

Teams will be unable to officially make any trades until 2pm AEDT on Wednesday, and must complete all trades before the trade deadline at 7.30pm AEDT.

And that is where we leave things for day seven

Whew, what a day.

We had FOUR confirmed trades on day seven, a turf war kick off between West Coast and Fremantle fans, and plenty of other shenanigans.

It's been a blast as per usual.

One more day to go of this madness.

I'll see you here at 10am AEDT.

Unpacking the Dan Houston trade

Gday Chris - what’s your initial reaction on the Houston trade now that it’s through? Who is the on paper winner?

- Johnny Rocket

Hi Johnny,

If I'm looking at what each team gave up to get what they got, Port Adelaide seems a big loser out of this deal.

If you're giving up a two-time All-Australian AND next year's first-rounder, Jack Lukosius can't be the best asset you're getting back.

Collingwood and the Suns have both done incredibly well out of the deal.

Gold Coast is somehow getting two future firsts for a salary dump of Lukosius and Rory Atkins. Madness.

Houston is going to be a tremendous fit for the Magpies.

Could Clayton Oliver force a move?

If clayton oliver publicly address something about getting traded to geelong will a deal happen

- Jefferson

Hi Jefferson,

That would certainly throw a spanner in the works if Clayton Oliver goes public with a trade demand on the deadline tomorrow.

Will it move the needle? Probably not, Melbourne has talked a really tough game so far.

Rating Essendon's work so far

Hi Chris, loving your work! Would you put Essendon as a win, loss or neutral in the trade period thus far? And does this change if we move on stringer (please!)? Thanks!

- Sophie

Hi Sophie,

It's too early to deem whether it is a win, loss or neutral, but I like that Essendon seems to be on the same page finally.

It's obvious that they're going in a direction which prioritises youth, and that's evidenced by their hardline stance on Jake Stringer.

I think previous Bombers regimes would have caved to Stringer's contract demands and potentially dealt away draft capital to get in the Dan Houston race.

Essendon is more than one piece away, so the fact that they're not skipping the steps in this rebuild is the right move.

Matthew Owies speaks after sealing Eagles move

Matthew Owies finally found a new club this afternoon after spending the trade period in limbo.

The small forward told SEN that he was baffled by reports suggesting he was after a pay packet of up to $800,000 annually.

“I couldn’t believe those reports and it was the cherry on top in a stressful time,” he said.

“It’s been a stressful time for me the last few weeks. I loved playing for Carlton and will miss it but it came clear I wasn’t going to be staying and I’m grateful to West Coast for the opportunity.”

What is causing the delay in the Houston deal?

The Houston deal delay could be to do with Port getting clearance to trade their future pick? Although they’re getting one back in, so you’d think it’d be cut and dry

- Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I thought that too initially, but there were reports last week suggesting Port was given the all-clear from the AFL to trade next year's first-rounder in this deal.

Something is amiss...

When will James Peatling get done?

How far is James Peatling deal

- Stefan

Hi Stefan, and shoutout to Walker, who also asked about where things stand with James Peatling.

At this stage, it looks like this is a deal for tomorrow.

The latest reports are that the Giants are after a future second-round pick from the Crows.

2h agoTue 15 Oct 2024 at 5:34am

Why the wait on the Houston deal

if clubs agree to a deal, why do AFL have to sign off on it?

- Gomez

Hi Gomez,

Look, who knows, really.

My guess is that they've got to make sure it's all air tight in terms of salary cap stuff.

Where to now for the Eagles?

Firstly.... cracking job with the updates, definitely been an enjoyable feed to keep me distracted throughout the work day. What do you think the chances are West Coast are scheming a late minute play to get back up the draft board this year? If they get two first futures for Barrass, then making a play to turn them into a high pick this year? Or am I a depressed eagles fan clinging to any bit of hope I can and not putting all my chickens in chad warners *unknown* want to come home.

- Pauly O

Hi Pauly,

I don't think West Coast moves back up this year's draft, because they wouldn't have traded back if they wanted to stay in the top five.

A lot of West Coast's game plan is centered around possibly trading for Chad Warner next year, should he decide to come home to WA.

Here's what Damian Barrett said on Trade Radio earlier today.

How to build a premiership list

Replying to Sajaad, that was discussed on the ABC AFL podcast recently. Paul Roos referred to Geelong and Sydney as two very successful teams who have NOT had many high-end draft picks for some time.

- C.

Hi C,

That's a very good point you make. Geelong and Sydney have made a living off killing these moves on the margins.

2h agoTue 15 Oct 2024 at 5:29am

What should the Eagles have done?

By your response to Former West Coast Supporter, I take it you don't agree with West Coast tactics/targets this trade period. What would you have done?

- Josh

Hi Josh,

I'm personally not a fan of trading down in the draft at the best of times, let alone this particular one.

Just stick at No.3 and pick an elite player and if they want to leave a few years down the line, you cross that bridge when you get there.

We still wait on the Dan Houston deal

So while the details of the Dan Houston deal have been revealed by multiple reports, the deal is still yet to be officially ticked off by the AFL.

Surely Port isn't going to pull out a second time, right? RIGHT?!
