Victoria's Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan has addressed questions about her political future as speculation that Daniel Andrews will soon quit the state's top job continues to mount.

Rumours have been rife in recent months that Mr Andrews is eyeing retirement from politics with three consecutive election victories already under his belt.

Opposition Leader John Pesutto on Monday predicted Mr Andrews will leave parliament this year, arguing the Premier had "checked out" after more than eight years in the role.

Ms Allan was asked by Tom Elliott on 3AW on Tuesday whether she remained next in line to replace Mr Andrews when he brings his time as Premier to an end.

The question came just hours after Ms Allan stood alongside Mr Andrews to reveal the 2026 Commonwealth Games are no longer going ahead in regional Victoria due to a major cost blowout.

Ms Allan, who has been Minister for Commonwealth Games Delivery since June last year, declined to directly answer Elliott's question and instead commented on her enjoyment at being Deputy Premier, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and the Suburban Rail Loop, and the MP for Bendigo East.

She also referenced Mr Andrews' repeated statements in the aftermath of the November 2022 state election where he said he was committed to serving a full term.

"As I've said on a number of occasions, I enjoy enormously the job I'm doing, I have the job I want, the job I enjoy in terms of representing the community in Bendigo," Ms Allan told Elliott on Tuesday.

"Working hard on delivering transport infrastructure, in terms of delivering projects like the Metro tunnel, the Suburban Rail Loop, the North East Link.

"We've got a lot to do Tom. The Premier has made it very, very clear he's also very, very happy continuing to lead the state and is doing a terrific job."

Mr Andrews last week told Il Globo he remained committed to serving as Premier as he has "a lot to do, a lot to build, a lot to see through".

When asked by journalist Riccardo Schirru if he wanted to win a fourth mandate, Mr Andrews delivered an unequivocal "absolutely".

In June last year, Mr Andrews said discussions had not taken place about a handover of the top job amid Ms Allan's election as Deputy Premier after James Merlino's resignation.

Ms Allan, who was first elected to state parliament in September 1999 and is from the same Socialist Left faction as the Premier, received the unanimous support of her caucus colleagues after Mr Andrews earlier backed her in as Deputy Premier.

Earlier on in her interview with Elliott Ms Allan defended the decision to pull the pin on the 2026 Commonwealth Games slated to be held across Geelong, Bendigo, Shepparton, Ballarat and Gippsland.

"We did that based on a pretty straightforward set of numbers. When we originally agreed to host the games back early in 2022, we set aside $2.6 billion in the budget of that year," she said.

"In recent days and weeks as the numbers were being finalised through tender processes and market sounding, detailed planning and design, when that number exceeded $6 billion for a 12-day event, quite simply the equation became very straightforward about what was in the best interests for Victoria.

"And that was why the decision was taken and announced this morning."

The government has instead announced a $2 billion package that includes a tourism fund and a boost to social and affordable housing across regional Victoria.
