Brisbane star Dayne Zorko has been left baffled by a “rough” penalty that cost his side a goal in the AFL Grand Final against Sydney.

The former Lions skipper had been quick to try and man the mark of Swan Robbie Fox just outside the arc when he was hit with a “tough” 50-metre call on Saturday.

The decision ensured Fox was walked to the square and he made no mistake to close the Swans to just seven points in the second term.

“That is not correct! Oh umpire … he got to the right spot!” Dermott Brereton said, unhappy with the 50m penalty paid to Fox.

Commentators were left stunned by the call.

“Oh that is rough!” Brian Taylor said.

“I’m not sure what he did wrong there.

“You’ve got to give the player time to get to the mark.

“You’ve got to give him a chance to man the proper mark … whether the umpire thought he came over the mark a little bit, that’s fair enough but gee, that’s tough.”

Fellow 7 commentator James Brayshaw said the decision ensured Sydney were handed the goal.

“It’s making a certainty of this,” he said.

“He can’t believe it Dayne Zorko but the Swans are taking it.”

The decision to award Fox the 50m penalty came only seconds after Kai Lohmann cashed in on a no-call against Sydney – despite Zac Bailey appearing to push opponent Dane Rampe under the ball.

“Maybe there was a missed push there – Zac Bailey used the arms, it didn’t get paid,” Matthew Richardson said on 7.

“That was definitely a push – Bailey had two hands in the back of Rampe,” former Lion Luke Hodge said.

“Umpire put the whistle to his mouth.”
