ILoveMakonnen has opened up about his estranged relationship with Drake and noted he once referred to him as an “eric benet-ass looking n-gga.”
Following the release of his smash-hit single “Tuesday,” Makonnen signed to the Toronto rapper’s OVO label in 2014. Apparently, he and Drake had a falling out shortly after the ink dried on his contract — he would ultimately leave two years later.
Now, in an interview with NPR Music, the rapper offered new details about his falling out with Drake. He revealed that at the 2015 Wireless Festival, their relationship took a turn for the worse.
“That’s when I knew something was weird. Just ’cause when I came out on set…and I started losing weight too, right—Drake had made a little joke like, ‘He a little Eric Benét-ass looking n***a.’ You know, like, ha-ha. And then I just started to feel this vibe,” he said.
Makonnen says it wasn’t the disclosure of his sexuality that caused an issue, but rather past tweets about Drizzy were to blame, according to the 34-year-old. In spite of this, he maintains that his comments were just a way to throw good-natured shade at Drake.
“[It’s] our little outlet. That’s our only way of attention,” Makonnen said. “It ain’t nothing personal.”

The rapper noted his relationship with the 6 God likely reached its breaking point when he referenced their rumored beef in a Tim Westwood freestyle over Drake beats. “Then everybody was saying, ‘You’re going after Drake.”
This wasn’t the first time ILoveMakonnen gave insight into his complicated relationship with Drake. In a 2017 interview with The Fader, the rapper claims Drake tried to fight him at a VMA afterparty.
While he didn’t call Drake out by name, he used plenty of hints to identify his “Tuesday” collaborator, including “we have a platinum-selling record together! The guy! The leader of the crew!”
“It was in the middle of the goddamn afterparty at the Up&Down club,” he said. “Everybody that was in there was in there. I’m in here around these Vanguard Awards and I’m accepted and I took pictures with Chainsmokers and G-Eazy and everybody and we all friends. And I’m here in the middle of the floor, no security, and they coming and I just step to the side and they see me and stop and the biggest motherfucker in the game goes, woo woo woo, ‘Next time I’ma fuck you up!'”
