Robbie Katter 'glad Labor is gone' — but not glad of LNP majority

Reporting by Hannah Walsh

Leader of Katter's Australian Party Robbie Katter says he's glad Labor is gone but not that the LNP has got a majority.

"I'm glad Labor is gone in a sense but I'm certainly not glad LNP is there with a majority," he says.

"I'm a little bit disappointed we didn't do better around north Queensland but that's the way the cookie crumbles."

KAP are predicted to secure three seats in Hill, Hinchinbrook and Traeger, and are ahead in Mirani.

Mr Katter says he doesn't think his views on abortion hurt his campaign "too much."

"Some people came up to me at the polling booth and said, 'I'm not voting for you because of abortion'," he says.

"I'll tell you exactly what I think, perhaps that's to my detriment I don't know; I don't really care."

Gold Coast keeps blue-ribbon reputation but Gaven still in doubt

The Gold Coast has kept its blue-ribbon reputation but Gaven is still in play, with the ALP's Meaghan Scanlon just ahead.

The hinterland Gold Coast electorate includes the working-class suburb Nerang.

ALP star Meaghan Scanlon previously held Gaven with a 7.8 per cent margin.

Ms Scanlon, a "born and bred" Nerang local,  was the youngest woman to ever be sworn into Queensland's Parliament in 2017, at 24.

(ABC News)

After a 6.7 per cent swing to the LNP, Ms Scanlon has 51.1 per cent of the two-party preferred vote to LNP challenger and former TV journalist Bianca Stone's 48.9 per cent.

Currumbin MP Laura Gerber said Ms Stone had run "an amazing campaign".

"It's too close to call at the moment [but] it would be hugely significant for us to win that seat."

Speaking to supporters last night, Ms Scanlon said the LNP continued to try make the Gold Coast a "sea of blue".

"The LNP did everything they could to take this seat from us."

Who has won the seat of Mulgrave?

Reporting by Conor Byrne from Cairns

A common question being asked and the answer is no one yet.

The preference count suggests it will be an LNP victory but further counting is needed to confirm whether the available LNP versus Labor preference count is the correct final pairing.

The seat was previously held by ALP with a margin of 12.2 per cent.

Mulgrave had the highest number of candidates in this election with 10, which ABC election analyst Antony Green says will create "a dog’s breakfast" in preference counts.

(ABC News: Conor Byrne)

Former Cairns mayor Terry James, who lost the council poll in April, has pulled ahead on preliminary votes and on preferences with just over half the votes counted.

“People really have had enough of what's been going on up in the far north, particularly with the crime, the housing, the cost of living, everything,” Mr James says.

His opponent is his former council colleague, Labor’s Richie Bates, who is not ready to concede and predicts a long count.

One Nation's James Ashby concedes defeat

Reporting by Vanessa Jarrett in Rockhampton

"Despite the personal defeat, we still won and I'm happy to see Labor gone," Mr Ashby shared on social media.

Labor's Brittany Lauga lost to the LNP's Nigel Hutton with a 13.7 per cent swing.

Mr Ashby will go back to his role as Pauline Hanson's chief of staff.

Labor's Shannon Fentiman backs Steven Miles to stay on as party leader

Reporting by Jack McKay

Labor's Shannon Fentiman is backing outgoing premier Steven Miles to stay on as Labor leader.

The ABC understands Ms Fentiman will not put her hand up for the job if Mr Miles wants to stay on.

The Labor leadership is automatically spilled after an election loss.

Mr Miles is yet to say if he wants to stay on as leader after last night leading the government to defeat.

There is precedent for ex-premiers leading their party in opposition.

Labor Senator Murray Watt puts positive spin on election defeat

Reporting by Tom Lowrey

Some senior federal Labor figures are looking to put a positive spin on last night's election defeat.

They're pointing to a result they say was narrower than it might have been, and the significant drop in the Greens vote in some key parts of Brisbane.

Employment Minister (and Queensland senator) Murray Watt was on Sky News this morning talking up the result.

Queensland Senator Murray Watt(ABC News: Matt Roberts)

"Queensland is a tough state for Labor federally, and the record shows that. But I actually take great hope from the results last night in Queensland," he says.

"Our vote hasn't gone backwards too far in the seats around Cairns, which is the federal (Liberal-held) seat of Leichardt.

"Importantly, it gives us a great amount of hope when it comes to some of the Brisbane-based seats currently held by the Greens. I think last night was a terrible result for the Greens.

"It gives us real hope that we can reclaim the seat of Griffith, and potentially gain the seats of Brisbane and Ryan as well when you look at those state results."

Murray Watt says Stephen Miles did a "remarkable job" and has left Labor with a "healthy opposition" once the LNP forms government.

Townsville-based LNP candidates projected to win three marginal seats

Reporting by Chloe Chomicki

Townsville-based LNP candidates are projected to claim three marginal Labor seats.

Townsville, Thuringowa and Mundingburra were held by Labor with margins of 3.1 to 3.9 per cent.

The crime focus of Townsville's Adam Baillie, Thuringowa's Natalie Marr, and Mundingburra's Janelle Poole resonated with North Queensland voters, who had youth crime at the top of their agenda going into this election.

'Some of the fundamentals were against us' says Dick

Labor's former deputy leader Cameron Dick tells ABC's Insiders regional Queensland has lost trust in his party.

He says LNP ran a "relentlessly negative" campaign about crime.

"I think in the end regional Queenslanders didn't trust us to address that issue," he says.

Mr Dick wouldn't confirm whether Steven Miles will stay on as opposition leader — but didn't reject the possibility of taking over.

"I think we let the dust settle.  Let our party go through this process, we need to heal a little bit as well, we need to have a good look at ourselves, that's the truth."

Speaking to supporters late last night, the LNP's Bree James said she was "super proud" to be in a Crisafulli government.

"I've been campaigning since October 4 since last year… we have not taken a single vote for granted," she said.

"We are going to turn this state around and it's time to get to work on Monday."

Ms James defeated Craig Crawford, who's held the seat for the ALP since 2015.

Nationals leader says they'll talk David Crisafulli 'around' on nuclear

Nationals leader David Littleproud says the Coalition will "talk" David Crisafulli around on nuclear.

The premier-elect has consistently said nuclear is not part of an LNP government’s plan.

"When you've got the same side of politics working together, you'll get a far more pragmatic outcome."

David Littleproud(ABC News)

The Coalition plans to build seven nuclear power plants, including two in Queensland.

If the states don't fall in line with the plan, the Coalition would have a mandate to repeal laws banning nuclear energy if it wins government, he says.

"We have to manage a national energy grid that transcends past Queensland into other states," he said.

"We'll also be ensuring that we send strong signals to the states about what we'll financially support and won't."

Labor says Steven Miles has conceded Queensland election

Former premier Steven Miles has called premier-elect David Crisafulli this morning to concede the election.

It’s a change from last night when just after 10pm Mr Miles addressed his party faithful at the Murrumba Downs Tavern.

"Watching the results tonight, it is clear that that hasn't been enough to secure a majority of seats for Labor, and also that the LNP is unlikely to have a majority," he told them.

Labor says the former premier will not be speaking publicly today.

When will vote counting restart?

The Queensland election vote count will restart at 9am today.

It'll take longer than usual because so many people voted early or by post, Pat Vidgen from the Queensland Electoral Commission says.

More than 1.6 million people voted at early polling centres and the QEC is also waiting for about 200,000 postal votes.

Votes cast outside their electoral district won’t be counted until Tuesday or Wednesday.
