Emma Stone would like to be called by her real name — Emily. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress said that after 20 years of using the stage name Emma, it would be “so nice” to be addressed by her birth name.

Stone explained that she started going by Emma when she started acting because there was already someone with the name Emily Stone in SAG-AFTRA, and the union has a rule preventing actors from having the same professional name. “Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’”

In addition to family and friends, Stone says many people who work with her call her Emily. Asked if she’d correct fans if they called her Emily instead of Emma, Stone said, “No. That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”

Ironically, long before SAG-AFTRA forced her to use a stage name, Stone asked her second-grade teacher to call her Emma in honor of her favorite Spice Girl, Emma Bunton. “Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now I am,” she told Jimmy Fallon in 2018.
