Is The Bear being a comedy a strategic choice?Wait, The Bear is a comedy?!!? How did it end up in that category! Surely its a drama!
- Darcy
Darcy, you're not alone: Dan and Eugene Levy even made a joke about it during their opening monologue.
In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.
People online are confused too. It didn't make sense last Emmys, and it still doesn't make sense now!
Quite simply, it's a comedy because The Bear elected itself as a comedy.
You could be cynical and say that putting a heavy show filled with intense performances against what's deemed to be lighter fare is a strategic move to win more...
Either way, The Bear probably wouldn't have the same track record if it was deemed a drama, competing with the likes of Succession, The Crown and Shogun.

Two for Baby Reindeer! And this time it's for creator Richard Gadd, looking spiffy in a kilt.
"This is the stuff of dreams, thank you to Netflix for letting me to tell this story.
"10 years ago I was down and out. I never thought I'd get my life together. I never thought I'd get myself together and here I am 10 years later getting one of the biggest writing awards in television
"No matter how bad it gets it always gets better, so if you're struggling, keep going I promise it'll get better."
Something tells me this isn't going to be the last time we see Gadd on stage tonight.

No, not that Will SmithSorry for anyone that expected the Fresh Prince to get up right then, the Best Writing for a Drama Series went to Will Smith, the director and showrunner of Slow Horses.
Props to him he did acknowledge the shared name up top of his speech.
"Despite my name I come in peace."
The other Will Smith is currently a couple years into a 10-year ban from the Oscars after he slapped Chris Rock on stage in 2022.

ICYMI: We have two new EGOTs!As of the Creative Arts Emmys, two people have joined the coveted EGOT club: the list of people who have won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
Composers and lyricist duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are the 20th and 21st EGOTs, winning Oustanding Original Music and Lyrics for Only Murders in the Building's third season.
Pasek and Paul (left) previously worked togehter on La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman, among others.( JC Olivera/Variety via Getty Images)They join the likes Audrey Hepburn, John Legend, Viola Davis and, most recently, Elton John, who was the last to reach EGOT status in January at the 2023 Emmys.
Nobody will be joining the gang tonight, as Pasek and Paul were the last GOTs (ie. they are just a Emmy away) for now.
(FYI, Vulture continually update their list of people just one award away. I'm sure Eminem is secretly gunning for that Tony.)

Billy Crystal, the king of award shows, takes the stageWhile awarding Best Variety Talk Series, Billy Crystal opened his diary to read his entries after appearing on each show.
The Daily Show: Had a great time with John [Stewart]. John said, 'Let's meet after, we'll have didnner right after the show.' I waited and he was gone.
Late Night wth Seth Meyers: Terrific interviewer, terrific writer. He said, 'Let's go to to the Pebble Bar and have a drink'. And I waited, and they said he had gone home.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Brilliant guy. I wonder if he's ever seen himself naked.
I didn't say they were funny! I said these are first impressions.
Cyrstal also shouted out his first time on the Jonny Carson show, acknowledging how late-night appearances can make a comedian's career.
All very cute. Who wouldn't want to have dinner with this man?

SNL greats give Lorne Michaels a pep talkAs Kristen Wiig, Seth Meyers, Bowen Yang and Maya Rudolph took the stage to award Best Variety Special Writing, they took the opportunity to address Saturday Night Live missing out on the previously award.
( Kevin Winter/Getty Images)It was the show's 85th loss, prompting them to find SNL's exec producer/creator Lorne Michaels in the crowd and give him a pep talk - ones that sounded like they had been on the receiving end many times before.
As Yang told Michaels, "it's okay that SNL didn't work out", imploring him to get back up and try again. Or, as Rudolph put it:
"Look at me. Each and every one of the 85 times you lost, you were robbed. You were R-O-B-B-E-D. Ro-be-Duh!"
SNL's resident straight man Meyers reminded us that SNL may have lost 85 awards, but has won more than 100 times. Rudolph: "I can't believe you're complaining Lorne. Grow up!"
As Micahels always does, he sat there stone-faced in every reaction shot.
