The Para Lionesses edge third-place game in Sao Paolo to seal bronze at the World Deaf Futsal Championship
England deaf women secured third place at the World Deaf Championships in Brazil, after a single-goal victory over Germany.
After a tight game, it was the Para Lionesses who found the edge thanks to Louise Hogan’s well-taken winner just four minutes from time.
The teams had previously met in the group stages when England came out as 5-3 winners and it was even closer this time, with a bronze medal at stake for the victors.
And Chris Day’s squad were well worthy of their placing in the end, after Hogan’s quickly-taken kick in saw her pick out Emma Brown in the area before darting forward to collect a return pass and emphatically fire home the winner to spark emotional celebrations.
England have been in action at the competition in Sao Paolo for over a week and played five games at Sao Jose dos Campos in the lead-up to Saturday’s fixture, only narrowly missing out on a place in the Final following Friday’s results.
After losing to their opening two games against Japan and hosts Brazil, the Para Lionesses embarked on a winning run which saw them beat Germany, Argentina and Republic of Ireland before Saturday’s final placing games.
