Gareth Southgate made sweeping changes to his his starting line up to give his back up stars a chance to impress ahead of their showdown with the defending European champions.

However, the hosts struggled against a resilient Australia in the first half, as Ollie Watkins' tame shot bounced back off the post.

Southgate's half time message saw England step up a gear after the restart and Watkins popped up from close range to poke home Jack Grealish's low cross.

Watkins' intervention proved to be enough to secure the win but Southgate will be left with mixed emotions on England's performance.

England vs Australia live updates, highlights England's second string endure mixed night against stubborn Socceroos

Southgate's pre-game plan against Australia was clear with a starting XI aimed at resting his key players and offering a chance to his back up options.

There is a strong chance that all eleven starters against Australia do not start against Italy on October 17.

Watkins' goal was a high point on the night for the Aston Villa striker but other players pushing for a start against Luciano Spalletti's team only showed flashes of promise.

Southgate is a creature of habit in defence, with changes from his normal back line very unlikely, and Jack Grealish looked short on match fitness, despite laying on a assist for Watkins.

James Maddison is the Premier League's in form player, based on a superb start to life at Tottenham, and he could retain his spot, if Southgate wants more creativity in his midfield, but it will be a close call.

Southgate's Italy plan remains unchanged

By making so many changes, Southgate has ensured the clamour for starting Maddison and Jarrod Bowen was answered, with no impact on Euro 2024 qualification.

Bowen, Maddison, Grealish and others are valuable options for Southgate and England but the former defender remains unshakable in his loyalty to certain players and tactics.

A lack of left back will be covered by Kieran Trippier against Italy with Southgate unflinching in his backing of Harry Maguire.

A patchy performance against the Socceroos will justify Southgate's stance on the status quo but the absence of Bukayo Saka could give Maddison a crucial chance.

FULL TIME: ENGLAND 1 AUSTRALIA 0

Southgate's England get over the winning line at Wembley as Ollie Watkins' close range finish secures victory over Australia.

It was a mixed performance from the squad players on Soutgate's roster, but a win is a positive for the hosts, ahead of the crucial clash with Italy.
