Does This Sink The Dons?

Could this be the night Essendon blew their finals hopes? In a game of savage momentum swings, the Dons gave up the final three goals of the game, including the winner with 51 seconds left, to slump to a two-point loss to Adelaide. In a high-scoring thriller, the Crows led by 36 points in the second term, then gave up seven goals in a row as the Dons seized control. The Bombers appeared to have the game iced entering time-on in the last but two goals to Darcy Fogarty and the winner to Josh Rachele sunk the Dons. The Bombers would have soared to second tonight with victory but could find themselves out of the eight by the end of the round if other results go against them. They will need three wins from their final five games to make the finals. Realistically, they will have to get the job done in the next four matches against St Kilda, Fremantle and Gold Coast - all in Melbourne - given they close out the home and away season against ladder leader Sydney and the red-hot Brisbane at the Gabba.

Walker’s Days Numbered

Taylor Walker’s days as the main man in Adelaide’s forward line might be over. This is not to say that Walker’s time is up, but the Crows’ next tilt at the flag will be with Darcy Fogarty and Riley Thilthorpe as the key targets inside 50. Fogarty played with a swagger and freedom he does not show when Walker is in the side. When all appeared gone for the Crows, his third and fourth goals gave them life. Thilthorpe is not the finished product but the No.2 pick from the 2020 draft must be playing regular senior footy when fit. Three big forwards doesn’t go into two, particularly when none of them play as the second ruck. Out of contract at the end of the year, Walker is still of considerable value as a mentor off the field, and on it should there be injuries.

Tackle Under the Spotlight Again

Just 24 hours after the drama at the AFL’s appeals board, the league’s rules on dangerous tackles are under the microscope again. Adelaide’s Ben Keays and Essendon’s Matt Guelfi both face nervous waits after laying tackles where their opponents’ head hit the turf. Keays brought Jye Caldwell down with a fierce tackle that forced the Bombers midfielder out of the game. Caldwell, with one arm pinned by Keays, was unable to use his free arm to break his fall due to the force of the tackle. After taking some time to get to his feet, Caldwell left the field to be tested. With Caldwell needing to be off for 20 minutes to be tested, the Dons subbed him out. In Guelfi’s tackle, Sam Berry also had one arm pinned but was able to cushion his fall though his head also hit the ground. Guelfi was rewarded with a free kick for holding the ball, and Berry played out the game.

‘A bit’: Keays admits concern after Caldwell tackle

Ben Keays spoke to Channel Seven post game.

What about your game, a handful, missing Izak Rankine and Tex Walker in the forward half but you’re playing with so much confidence this season.

Thank you. We share the load, I guess. They’re two of our most prolific players but we’ve gut do it without them so heaps of boys stood up tonight. It is a solid group which is great.

What about Josh Rachele, the match-winner. You with the handball but I’m sure you were riding that one through the line.

I was praying. I was cramping up. I wanted something to happen so I could get a spell. He’s been amazing. He is capable of big moments. Really plays his role. Hard at it tonight. He had a fantastic game.

There was an incident with Jye Caldwell late with a tackle. Do you as a player feel it in that moment, the concern across the league at the moment?

A bit. I thought it was a tackle and he got winded. I did think he hit his head. Luckily, he was just winded. Umpire paid a free kick. It is what it is. We continued to play hard.

Looking at Nick Murray, an ACL in July of ’23, do you know at this point in time what the prognosis might be there?

Not sure. Praying for him. He’s been so good for us, so good to come back. If it is something serious, no doubt he’ll come back again. He is a resilient lad and we love him as a teammate.

Rachele’s ‘crazy’ moment

Adelaide’s Josh Rachele spoke to Channel Seven post game.

Congratulations, this is a massive win. A winning goal. Talk us through that final moment.

It was crazy. A few special moments from Ben Keays especially and Darcy Fogarty in the quarter. But, there’s a few moments when it’s not going your way and the last moment went my way. I’m grateful.

You mentioned Ben Keays, he’s kicked five himself on a Friday night stage. He has been sensational this season.

The last three or four weeks he’s taken his game to another level. He is great leader of the football club. Great grate to see his second opportunity with the Crows, he is making the most of it.

Nice to see the celebration. A hug with the crowd. They travel and travel strong, the Adelaide mob.

We have to be loyal to fans. They are here today, my friends and family. It is a special moment.

What was Nicksy’s message at three-quarter time? You were in it throughout the game but what was his final message?

We had a fantastic first half purely down to our contest. Probably went away from it a bit in the third quarter. His message for us was to go out and bring a the contest again and play with no fear.

What does a win like this do to the group with five games to come?

It is unbelievable for us. I think we’re only about six points now behind Collingwood and Hawthorn that is a massive game I think on Saturday. We’ll look at it closely. It gives us belief.
